Help With A Singer 136W100 Please

Hi all,

Just acquired a Singer 136W100 post-bed machine that's in sort of rough shape and I have a few questions. I apologize in advance that I'm not experienced with sewing machines, though I'm fairly handy.

1) I've attempted to time the hook and have managed to get it to come around through the scarf of the needle when the needle is on it's way back up. However, the hook actually comes into contact with the needle and the needle comes into contact with the needle guard. I am unsure how to move the hook back away from the needle (or do I move the needle bar away from the hook)?

2) Possibly related to the first issue - the manual indicates 16x4 needles, but I can't locate any. If using Schmetz or Organ needles (for size 69 thread), what equivalent should I be using?

3) The manual describes how to place the bobbin into a bobbin case with a cap and then how to place the bobbin case into the post, but this machine has an open bobbin case already in the post. Is this a typical upgrade? I notice that when the hook pulls the thread around and over the bobbin, it does not go so smoothly. Maybe a case with a bobbin cap would help with this issue?

4) Is it possible for me to replace the oil wicks on the machine and does anyone have any tips for that? I want to clean the machine thoroughly inside and out but don't want to pull the wicks out if I'm going to have trouble replacing them.

Thank you in advance for any tips or advice with this machine. Other than the manual and parts list, I've had a lot of difficulty uncovering info in this machine.

The entire hook saddle will need to be moved to the right. This is a bit of a task but if you understand machinery you can do it. Remove the gear cover on the bottom of the machine on the right end of the hook drive shaft loosen the two set screws on the spiral driving gear also loosen the screws on the collar next to it. On the left end of the shaft is the post there are 2 large screws that hold it , loosen those and shift the hook saddle to the correct position then lock those screws. back to the right end now push the collar snug to the bushing and tighten screws, now hold the shaft to the left and the spiral driving gear to the right removing all end play and lock the screws. replace cover.

I use 16x2 needles Bob Kovar has needles Toledo Industrial sewing machine.

I think you need a bobbin case. The case and cap are one piece

Thank your quick answer and my apologies for my delayed reply. I'm assuming the "hook saddle" is the top of the post where the hook attaches? Either way, I was able to move it to the right without a problem. And that fixed the issue! I did have to do a few adjustments, but thank you again.

Of course, this does lead to a few more questions! Do I need to move the left side of the post over as well to accommodate the change in position of the right side of the post?

And, what do you folks use to measure the distance of the needle bar, which fort timing, the manual indicates should be set so that the hook is at the center of the needle and 1/16 inch above the eye when the bar is 3/32 inch above the lowest point? I used wing dividers and eye-balled it, but I am sure there is a better way!

The bobbin case in this machine doesn't look like it will accommodate a cap. I've included a photo.
