Can I "stew" the iron (cast iron tubs pieces) in an open container? or must i seal the container?

also if i taped the leather together to sew it should i do something special to the area where the tape was before i dye the leather?

I would seal it so you don't have any evaporation, but do leave a vent hole. One person on the boards seal it tight in a glass container and pressure built up until it exploded.

I think I would dye it before the taping.
