OurJud Report post Posted February 25, 2014 (edited) I have searched for an answer to this and looked at the pinned topic, but I couldn't find any reference to my specific question. As stated in my other thread, I'm planning to make a slim, minimalistic front pocket card/cash wallet and would like to know if it's necessary to fold the edges on the outer card slot panels, bearing in mind I will be using very thin leather (1mm or under). Also, do I need to stitch the open edges as well as gluing? One of the posts in a thread my search threw up mentioned that the cards tended to catch on the stitching and sometimes stick because of the waxed thread. My only concern is that if the folds are only glued, will the cards not catch on the edge of the folded flap and pull it away over time? Andrew Chee Report post Posted February 25, 2014 You don't have to stitch them. You can use contact cement and that will hold. It's not an area that takes a lot if stress. Bear in mind that if you want to do a good job you are going to have to skive the edge down to about half thickness. So if you're gonna do a 1/4" fold you will have to skive a 1/2" area. If you want to fold the edges thats also possible.These two images are of my second wallet - no glue used, just stitching.I made the pcokets for the cards using a purple satin, that was stitched to the rear of the main pocket face. The satin cuts down on the overall thickness and it looks quite flashy too! (I did cheat slightly and used double sided sellotape to hold the satin in place whilst i stitched them into position.)I did not fold any edges, just used a wooden burnisher to smooth the edges of the leather.edit - looking again - i didnt burnish these edges very well !! thats something that improves with practice.The great thing about leatherwork is that its really easy to have a go and find a way that works for you. JoeSnuffie Report post Posted February 25, 2014 I use contact cement on the rolled edges unless I'm adding a cloth liner. In that case I stitch as well. I use contact cement from the hardware store and NOT rubber cement. I also dilute the contact cement about 33% with acetone to make it easier to apply with accuracy to leather. Follow the directions on the contact cement and it will not come loose once it cures. It can be pulled apart but the leather will tear, not the glue.
