I am starting to do more and more patch sewing onto leather vest and jackets. I originally started sewing my own on a singer 401a just because I got the machine for next to nothing and couldn't find anyone around me that did good work so I said what the hell I think I can do it. The 401 works ok but when you hit the seams it really struggles it the seam has much mass to it. I have been doing this for about 3 years now and am starting to pick up more and more business. I have been looking around trying to figure out what machine would best serve my needs to replace my 401a. I know the 401a isn't the machine of choice but like I said I made due at the time. I have been looking on Craigslist at some consews and jukis

Im not sure if I need to go with a walking foot or not. My intentions are to try to find one that needs a motor and put a servo on it. Which Consew or Juki would you all recommend

If you are sewing patches onto vests then a late model Singer 29 such as the 29k72 would be a good choice

How much do you want to spend? Even walking foot machine can struggle with thick seams. Maybe something as simple as a 31-15 and using the handwheel through the seams will do the job.

I have a 1901 circa 29-4 that I use for sleeves and pockets looking to speed up my flat sewing
