My First Leather Sewing Machine...lots Of Questions?

I have been wanting to learn to work with leather for quite a while now and have been looking at the Singer Model 29-4 patcher sewing machines for over a year now and finally found what I thought would be a fixer upper. Found one that appeared to be frozen and neither the large hand wheel or the butterfly tabs that turns the walking foot would move. I figured that I would take a gamble and pick up the machine in the hopes it would be salvageable. Got it home and gave it a bath in penetrant and it freed up some, but the large wheel/crank wouldn't move very well. After looking it over for a while, I noticed that the part that sat on the very top of the machine over the needle housing ( it has an eyelet that the thread passes through) wasn't moving up and down much when turning the hand wheel and when I removed the small screw and flat bar that held it in place, it freed the whole thing up and the machine now runs smoothly. After repositioning the part with the thread eyelet correctly and replacing the little flat steel retaining bar and screw it runs flawlessly. Pretty excited about that. But I now have to begin the process of acquiring all the necessary parts to get this machine in top working condition...well, in as good a condition as a 100 year old machine can get in. I have looked online and found operators manuals and parts lists but would really benefit from a schematic like breakdown of the parts to this machine. Can't seem to find one that actually shows the machine in an exploded view with parts labeled for identification. I couldn't be more of a noob and would appreciate it if anyone could steer me in the right direction. I need to learn what the parts are and where they are positioned on the machine to order replacement parts...new drive belt ...the part that is next to the needle with a screw in it that fits over a square shaft ...and the rubber o-ring that fits on the gizmo that allows the bobbin to fill with thread...needles etc., as well as a bunch of other necessary parts to get the machine up and running. Sorry for the rambling post, but any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks will do. It would be great to get ahold of a parts list/ breakdown type schematic to be able to identify the parts that others discuss here and on other sites.

I myself have been spending quite some time on the subject of parts availability in anticipation of picking up a Adler 30-1 this evening.

Dude on Ebay wrote: "Another question I've often heard concerns the availability of parts for both machines. The Adler 30 and Singer 29 series use the same needles, presser feet, bobbin shuttle and many, many other parts. There is a exploded parts diagram for 29K70 online that while the part no. doesn't seem to crossover to 29-4 will at least give the Singer part names.

J Hayes...the link didn't work for me, thanks for trying though. Stanly, I just downloaded a free service manual and parts list for the 29K71 from the Singer link you provided, thanks for that.

On another note...the timing of my bobbin and shuttle is off enough to prevent it from picking up the bobbin thread. The hook stops about 1/16 of an inch short. If I remember right, Wizcraft had posted that the tiny set screw that is located in the end of the bobbin shuttle/carrier assembly should be checked to make sure it isn't loose. I actually removed this set screw (it passes through the shuttle carrier and shuttle pinion gear) and it looks very worn...the tip is ground to a fine point and it is perhaps 1/8" in length. I attempted to order a replacement but it seems that singer had used two different sizes of that set screw in the 29-4 and the one I'm supposed to have is part no. 327 and is nowhere to be found. I have been told by Harry at Pilgrim Shoe that the one I need is the smaller of the two that were used on the 29-4. If anyone knows where to locate one of these set screws and can give me any info I would appreciate it.
