We just bought a used singer 241 and have a question. We changed the oil in the machine and cleaned it up a bit. We read in the manual that after they sit awhile to hand oil parts, till the oil gets started in the machine. We did that. We then ran the machine a little and have yet to see the oil going thru the little peak in window. My question is, how long should it take to get the oil moving and is there anything to check before this happens?

We have a Singer 251-2 that had the same problem when we bought it 5 years ago. Find a very thin piece of wire about 12" long and feed it throught the tube that is dribbling oil or spraying oil into the site glass area. Feed it from the top down. There is something cloggling the tube and you need to clear it. Once it is clear you should see oil running freely when you "put-the-pedal-to-the-metal".

And, one more thing in case you are cheap...use only sewing machine oil (sold as industrial sewing machine oil). Get a gallon of it and use only that. If you are using something other than industrial sewing machine oil (clear sewing machine oil made from pur mineral oil) then so "Help you God"!!!!!!

Thanks for the info. We did put the right oil in the machine. Now it looks like all is well. At slow speeds its starting to drip. I think it will all be fine. It may be a steady stream at fast speeds but that may be a while before we try that.

The 241 was designed as a high speed machine for 3000sm. If you gear it down to 600 or so SPM then there is very little load on the bearings so wear is not an issue.

These machine heads are only worth $50 each so just keep an eye out for a spare at the right price.
