rusticbob Report post Posted March 17, 2015 I am just starting in leather working. I retired in January, and have made belts, cartridge carriers, wallets, etc. I have the oppertunity to pick up a old, but in good working condition a Singer 241-13, from a upholstery shop that is closing. What questions should I ask? My intention is to make leather pillows, and handbags. Its for sale for $350.00? Does anyone have experience with this machine? Is it worth the money? Thanks,
Darren Brosowski Report post Posted March 17, 2015 A 241 is not going to be good for anything more than upholstery leather.
Cobra Steve Report post Posted March 17, 2015 The Singer 241 was made for the garment industry, It has no reverse. You are better off with a walking foot or compound feed machine.
rusticbob Report post Posted March 17, 2015 Thanks for the info! Same shop also has a Singer class III, 152, machine that he said runs fine, but is out of timing. How much trouble would it be to replace the timing belt on this machine. That one is selling for $150.
Cobra Steve Report post Posted March 17, 2015 An Industrial Sewing Machine store would probably charge between $80-$200.
rusticbob Report post Posted March 17, 2015 Thank you both for the information, I think I'll pass on these machines. Can anyone suggest a good starter machine for leather pillows, handbags, pouches, etc. I will continue to handstitch the really heavy leathers. I finally built a stitching pony this past weekend, and that has made stitching a whole lot easier. Thanks again.
