btrippy Report post Posted April 28, 2015 Hi guys, I'd like to introduce myself: My name is Brandon, I'm from NY and am very interested in leather products. I've always been a fan of the richness and how it adds an air of high quality to anything it touches. I currently work with a jeweler who I am very interested in having help me make custom clasps for leather braided bracelets. The style of braiding is what I'm unsure of. I believe it to be a flat leather lace that is double braided or maybe two seperate rows of double braiding..I would love to create bracelets out of really bright, vibrant colors like seafoam green, lapis, coral, and would love if someone could point me in the direction (after establishing what type of leather lace I need) where I can find it in the colors I'm looking for. I will stop my bumbling now and just attach some pictures for you all. Thank you in advance for your help, I will post finished images of my end product. -- Thanks again, Brandon
King's X Report post Posted April 28, 2015 Check out Y-Knot Lace or Knotty Linda in Canada. Maybe Springfield leather in Mo they may be able to help you out. There are many books available plus some really good videos on YouTube that can help you. Good luck!
25b Report post Posted April 28, 2015 If you're on Facebook, check out the rawhide and roo braiders' guild (http://www.facebook.com/groups/rawhidebraiding/) Lots of great folks in the group and they are willing to help if you have questions. "Knotty Linda" isn't in there though.
btrippy Report post Posted April 29, 2015 Thank you both very much for your valuable comments! I also noticed some people call this style bracelet I'm looking for a "snake belly". I'm curious to know how a bracelet like this is constructed. It looks like two bands weaved together but I can't be sure
ENC Report post Posted May 1, 2015 My guess is a single leather piece split down the middle but not to the ends, as a core to wrap around. (look up magic braid or mystery braid to see what I mean). Then a single piece of lace wrapped in a figure 8 around the leather core(s) with a half twist as it passes through the slit to keep the top side up. If you look closely the twists in the center are offset left to right by half the width of the wrapping lace. Also you can see skin in the second picture as the two pieces of lace go through the vertical. Ray
btrippy Report post Posted May 3, 2015 Thanks for your comment Ray, I did watch a youtube video on magic/mystery braid to learn more about that braid style. I think you're right this did appear to be one single piece of leather split down the middle - in the video I watched the strands were thick, but I imagine I can cut them to whatever thickness I desire. If I wanted to achieve this same braid style in say "two-tone" how would I go about doing that? Is there a way to make the same mystery braid style bracelet without using the single leather piece, and flat cord instead?
