What Are These Called And Where Do I Buy Them?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Just getting started with leathercrafting, so I'm learning everything as I go. I'm trying to create an outfit similar to the one worn by Sir Ansgar, a character from The Quest (reality show from ABC, it's on Netflix. Check it out!)

He has a few different pieces he wears, one of which is like a loose gorget or mantle draped over the shoulders. Looks like something I could put together without too much trouble, but I am at a loss as to what the small, celtic-like disks sewn onto the leather are called or where to buy them. I found the term conchos somewhere, but from what I've found those seem to be more of a decorative piece, not something you'd buy in bulk to decorate like this.

If anyone knows what these are actually called so I can search where to buy them, I'd greatly appreciate it! Also, if you had to guess on the thickness of that leather, what would you say?

Thanks a ton!

Google is your friend. Celtic Conchos. http://www.ebay.com/itm/CELTIC-CONCHOS-11-Designs-Nickle-Antique-Brass-1-Screwback-Knots-Steampunk-/130946256267

As for leather weight. If you want it stiff use 7-8 oz, if you want it to flow use 2-3 oz. For everything else use 4-5 oz. This is talking about leather apparel and not other projects. I have some 2-3 with a very soft hand,(thats what its called). Its so soft you can drape it over a finger and it lays like fabric. I have other pieces of 2-3 that has a stiffer hand. Set it on your upright finger and it folds in half but does not drape.

It really depends on the type of leather and what you want it to do.

Thanks for the tips. I had googled and found conchos, but I was holding out hope that there was something else that was a bit more affordable than everything I've found. I'll need 75 or so of these suckers and most of what I'm seeing are $2+ each.

That ebay page I posted has 11 for $6.99USD. Unfortunatly TV and Movie costume departments have a larger budget that us normal folk.

Hmm, I interpreted that as 11 designs to choose from, but you get just 1 of them. I'll PM the seller to verify.

Thanks for helping out!

In regards to the leather for this, I've found some decently priced 2-3oz veg tanned leather, but it says its calf rather than cow and has a much lighter look to it. Is there a big difference between the two types, if they are both veg tanned and the same thickness? The shop has both, but they only have huge cuts of cow leather that costs 5x as much as the smaller cut of the calf leather.
