flhfxd Report post Posted December 16, 2015 Greetings all, I have to color a logo ( red, white and blue NHL hockey team logo ) that I carved into a wallet and I would like to put a light shade of stain on the rest of the leather. Then give it a finisher over the whole works. So can I color over the stain? I'll be using the dyes from Tandy for the coloring. And the stain was well. Thank you for any help you can offer. Cheers, Flhfxd.
druid Report post Posted December 16, 2015 yes, you can paint over dye but it will take a few coats to make it "pop." The first application absorbs into the leather....see the progression: first application. See how 'dark' it is, even wet: 2nd application: Final:
Art Report post Posted December 16, 2015 Stain does not cover, it may have a tendency to "mix". You are better off using Stain for the overall, and acrylic paint for the colors. Rule is generally "hot" on the bottom and "cold" (or less hot) on the top. IOW don't put something underneath something that will dissolve it. So stain it, paint it, and finish it with a water based finish. Art
