drof99 Report post Posted December 21, 2008 I've built a shed outside to do some leatherwork and other things is. Here is my question. Can I store rolled up leather sides outside in the shed? Should be good and dry. The problem I'm wondering about is the temp. I live in Iowa so it stays frozen most of the Winter. Will the have a bad effect on the leather? It is insulated but still will be cold. I will heat the shed when I'm out working in it. What is the best way to keep the leather stored? Right now I just roll the side back up like it is when I buy it. Thanks for the help.

blueheelenvet Report post Posted December 21, 2008 Im in Northern Nevada and the winters can get cold. I had the same issue so I decided to bring my leather in for the winter. I keep it rolled just like when I buy it. My only conern for keeping my leather outside is the cold but also just in case something happens to the roof and it leaks. I know this is a huge "what if" but the leather is the most important part of the art and it costs the most. Good luck and I hope this helps Merry Christmas
Elegant Report post Posted December 22, 2008 I see two immediate concerns: Long term exposure to Dry, cold weather will dry out your leather. Heating the building sporadically is likely to cause condensation.

Moisture in the air may not be visible or detectable without instruments. Moisture is the enemy. I keep all of my rolled hides in a temperature and humidity controlled location. They are too expensive to leave anything to chance. Once you have mold spores all over the shop, getting the place cleansed is a bigger nightmare than buying new hides. Best practice is not to let mold or mildew get started in the first place. My $.02.
