Finishing technique used

Hello all

I was wondering if anyone knows what finishing technique was probably used on this possibles belt pouch? It is a beautiful piece done by John Wellings. I like how the edges have a darker tone and the cherry color of the center but have no idea how to attempt replicating it (the finish, not the bag).

The bag was probably dyed the cherry color and then a dilution of the darker color was applied with an airbrush to the desired opacity and tone.  Looks like stitching was done last.
