Lining a Guitar Strap

Recommended Posts

Quote

I'm making a guitar strap for a friend as a Christmas gift and want to line it but want to use the leather that I have on hand. The strap is  made of a piece of 6/7 oz belly which will be stamped and antiqued. Since I don't have any suede on hand, I'm wondering if it would work OK to line it with a piece 2/3 oz veg tan by sanding the face side to rough it up a little, them gluing to the flesh side of the strap, leaving the flesh side of the lining to show, then edge finishing as usual?  Anybody see drawbacks to this process? I generally use Scotch 77 or Gorilla spray glue to laminate layers and either one seems to work well. I would normally use heavier leather for a guitar strap but this will be getting fairly light, home use.

Here's my mock up:
