Cross Stitch Lacing For A Satchel

Please take a look at the images in this post by carr52.

I am trying to make a satchel using the cross stitched lacing on the sides but not for sure whats happening on the back side...

are the laces knotted

are they actually kinda stitched (one lace traveling down through all the holes and back up the other side)

I haven't located another post with this yet

any help would be appreciated.
