Recommended Posts

Good morning y'awl.

I was wondering if Horween carries a leather that can be wet formed or moulded to make small possibles pouches or bags? Thanks.

Not unless you can find some veg tanned Horween somewhere. Not gonna work with chrome tanned.

don't they produce veg tann, or i'm mistaken?

nrk, yes, I found they have Russet Horsehide veg tan. Tannery Row and Maverick Leather have options.

Yeah, they produce veg tan horse butt in limited quantities, but none of the "popular" ones (Chromexcel, Dublin, etc....the ones sellers seem to talk up on etsy and other places) are veg tanned.

25b, I think, if not mistaken, that in a sense, the definition of chromexcel is that is it is chrome tanned rather than veg tanned. The added chemicals make it supple, etc. so that its characteristics make it difficult to mold as veg tanned can be.

In my previous post, I was responding to nrk's post.

Chromexcel is a dual tannage. It's chrome tanned and then veg re-tanned I believe?

Nice article about the process to make CXL

There's been a lot of talk on this on here before. Most people heat stamp Horween leather. Some have been successful stamping with a shop press. I've used a small anvil (about 15-20 pounds) to press a stamp in before and it worked ok but not nearly as well as heat stamping does.

I've purchased black and brown 1x2 ft pieces. Will check it and post the results ;) here or in another topic?
