New At Staining/dying Please Help

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I recently had my friend make this really cool wallet for me. Since then I had been interested in making wallets as well. I am familiar with the carving and stamping he did to make the wallet but I have no clue how he did the multiple colors so clean and evenly changing into other colors so nicely. As a person that's new to dyes/stains. Can someone please explain how one would go about dying the leather similar to this? He says its a "secret".

Is he using dyes or stains?

Is the dyes/stains he is using Waterbased, oil, or alcohol solvents?

Does he dye each individual color wait for it to dry then apply the next color?

It almost looks as if he air brushed it on there I am not sure though.

It certainly can be done by using an airbrush. But by the picture it appears as though it is block dyed waiting for it to dry between each color. There are some videos showing how to do this on youtube.

Why do I think block dyed? in the cuts and tooling the dye does not appear to "go" down in them. Airbrushing would get full coverage into the cuts and tooling. block dying will only get in a little bit.

Should be able to do this with most dyes/stains with practice.
