Diluting Fiebings Pro Oil Dye

I tried diluting Fiebings Pro Oil Dye(1part) with neatsfoot oil (1,3 & 5 part batches) and the result was not good. Apparently the dye and neatsfoot oil did not mix well and when applied to the test pieces there were tiny pieces of dye particals showing.

What is the best way to dilute the Pro Oil Dye?

If you're diluting to lighten the color intensity, you need to use dye reducer. If you want to mix the dye with neatsfoot oil, I haven't perfected that one yet...I know there are people who do it well on the site... "hidepounder". What I do in the latter case is drop several drops of dye in a small amount of oil in a plastic cup... I then swirl it around really good to mix it up well, I try to apply it quick enough so that the dye doesn't have a chance to re-suspend itself.

I ususally do a 1:1 mix. But it will separate so mix it up even while using it.

If you are just diluting the dye, try DEA. If you actually want to color neatsfoot oil, there are products made for that, call Weaver's and ask.

I have used Tandy's Prodye for several years to color my NF oil, works well but is no more except for what I have on hand. I am now playing with the Feibing's dyes to see what works and what doesn't. I haven't got the Feibings Pro Oil dye to mix.

Do you warm you NF before you mix it? I have problems even with the pro dye mixing. What's you starting ratio, favorite ratio, and maximum ratio of dye to oil?

I mix anywhere from 6-12 oz per gallon of NF. I use either medium brown or dark brown depending on what I want. Just pour it in and shake it up. It stays mixed for me. I still have about 8 quarts of the Tandy dye left, so that is why I am playing with some of the Feibings to see what will mix when the Tandy is gone. The big thing is finding the color equivalents in the Feibings dye, color names mean nothing.
