Skiving Machine Problem

Recommended Posts

The leather has lines remained as the attached picture after skived by my skiving machine recently.
Is it because of the problem related to the bell knife? Can it be fixed? Many thanks!

Three things you may wish to check:

Did you use the stone on the inside of the Bell knife to remove "fuzzy edge"?

Sharpen knife in very small increments.

You may be feeding too slow.

Thanks Ferg,

I tried and this time I stoned it longer and tried to remove the burrs that may cause, but still i can see them though they appears to be not that obvious this time. So does it mean I need to sharpen the knife in a more aggressive way: deeper and longer?

And I also found that the leather tends to move upwards when feeding along. I tried to think of the logic: is it because the roller stone is more closer to the knife at the bottom side that near the user? or the "presser foot" not parallel to the roller stone? Is this thinking correct?

The roller stone needs to be adjusted as near perfectly aligned with the knife as possible.

Less aggressive. Using these machines can be very aggravating but super rewarding when you get it all figured out.

This is a post I made after I had learned to use my skiving machine.

Many thanks Ferg!

The article is useful. I tried to sharpen the knife very slowly and bit by bit, and the lines are fading away now! Thanks again Ferg.
