I did my first cat not too long ago myself...I found the eyes to be the hardest part.

Rose, I was practicing on a picture of our cat that died last year and my sister in law wants a picture of a cat on a checkbook laying under a bush with the leaves hanging down in front some, and I am still scratching my head on that one.

Good luck, I've only done one cat. It wasn't even really a cat, I guess, it was a cougar. I was lucky, Robb Barr put a pattern in his book that I could use.

Furred animals are tricky. About the only area you cut with your swivel knife are the eyes, nose and ear tips. Coloring the piece like you did helps bring out some of the depth.

What really helped me was Stohlman's book on Figure Carving.

Carving cats...hmmm,

Don't think that a cat's hide will be thick enough for carving...You'll need at least 3-4oz and I'd expect them to be about 2oz.

PS jusk kidding, I love cats =)

Nice carving - furry animals must be very hard to carve! I think I've seen some lions & cougars in a Stohlman's book - can't remember which one though =(
