Building my 1st saddle

Ok im building my first saddle so i need some info and help here,

the question is how do you do your cheyenne role as ive seen a couple of different ways and im not sure which way will be better for me to do,

1. the first way ive seen is when you nail a piece of leather to the top of the cantle and fold the seat over to form the roll.

2. the second is where you over lap the back of the cantle leather and fold back the leather and then pull the seat over the folded back cantle leather,

not verry well explained but i hope you get what im trying to get over i would be interested to hear how you do it, plus pros and cons of the different methods of doing it .... so please help me out here cheers Don

I do both of those. I put my cantle cover on first (skive the top of this, above the cantle, till it is pretty thin so that it will make a nice fold back on the cantle top. After this is glued on and folded back, then I put my cantle plugs on top of the cantle using glue to help hold in place till the nails are in. Pull the folded down cantle cover up to the under side of your plugs, being sure they glue well and run a heel pry (or rub stick) up under the roll in the crease. This will give you a nice line to go by when you are stitching the cantle binder.

When your seat goes in the final time, you will roll it over your cantle roll plugs and glue down.
