internet speed

Recommended Posts

Hello to all

I was wondering if someone with more pewter knowledge than me(which shouldn't be hard to come by) could give a fella some advice. Right now for our internet were going through our cellphone company (Verizon). It's works pretty good most of the time. But seeing as we live out in the sticks we don't always get the best reception. The wife thinks we would get faster speeds if we upgrade our wireless thingy the one we have is two years old. Our contract just expired so we need to renew. Verizon also has a usage cap. Well the other day embark called and said they had high speed internet in our area now through the phone line. The speed I think is 762 kps. My question is 762 kps fast enough to open pictures on LW without waiting and will that play stuff like utube videos without having to wait all day. If I go with the phone company it's about $60.00 cheaper a month than keeping my wireless service. So considering cost and speed how much do you notice the difference between say 762 kps and say 1.4 mps. Any and all advice welcomed and I do apologize if I've used the wrong terms.

Thanks, Mike

Mike i should probably preface that answer i just gave by saying this isnt an exact science. All internet communication is 2 way even downloads as evfey packet is verified and the published speeds of the providers are the maximumj not the actual if your wireless signal is weak you probably dont achieve the best possible speed. That said the you will get closer to the actual speed with a solid land line so it is possible that the difference in speed could be less than the 50% that the published speeds indicate i hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I think were going to try the land line and hope for the best as it is 60 bucks cheaper a month. When I check the speed on the wireless it bounces all over from nothing up to 1 mb. But usually runs around 300 to 600 kbps. So I'm not to sure we'll be losing any speed.

Thanks again, Mike

If you're out in the sticks and get crappy reception from Verizon, then you're not pulling the max 1.4 mbps that they advertise. As a result, you'll likely not notice a whole lot of difference with the DSL the phone company wants to sell you. Plus it will be more reliable and no bandwidth cap. I'd do it.

Just because a provider says you can get x-y speeds, doesn't mean your going to get y. There are too many variables that dictate what speed you end up getting. Add more (variables) to the mix with a cellular connection vs. an actual pipe.

*edited because I'm crap at proofreading my posts for spelling :P

I went ahead with DSL they just wired me up this afternoon. I'm fixin to plug the modem in. Hopefully it runs just as fast if not faster at least it will be steady. The installer said I was the farthest one out yet but her machine showed a good connection. I'll have to post a report in a few days after using it for awhile.
