Can the Craftool #8076 Edge Beveler's be sharpened ?

Greetings Leatherworker's !

To begin, I am a newbie with no experience using "leatherworking" tools.

I have used low cost China-made wood tools in the past and find that they are often dull when newly purchased and require some sharpening to get good results and even then, due to inferior metal, don't hold an edge very long and require frequent tune-up.

Question #1....Do the Craftool #8076 line of edge beveler's fit the above description or are they better ??

Question #2....Disregarding Brand, quality & cost, can edge beveler's be sharpened ?

Though i can't say that after two years of use my tools are 'Broken in', i can say i've had Great use and function and absolutely no problem with any tool made by Craftool. I use their Draw Knife,bevelers/groovers, and ALL of my stamping tools are from them, to name what i can think of, well worth buying.

As for Sharpening the Beveler, i haven't found a need to sharpen them yet, still clears through leather like new, So i can't really say.

Edge bevelers can be sharpened. A good book on all leather tools and how to sharpen them is Leathercraft Tools by Al Stohlman. There is a page towards the back of the book that tells how to sharpen edge beverlers.

A few years ago I decided to upgrade some of my edge bevelers and purchased a few of them from Ron's Tools. When I got the bevelers they came with a small steel rod to sharpen them with. To sharpen them, you set the rod on your bench, set a piece of wet/dry sandpaper or emory cloth over the rod, then run the groove in the tool over that. Ron's tools came very sharp and I don't know if I've ever had to sharpen them, but I did run my old Craftool edge bevelers over this and I was pretty amazed at how well they worked after that. You should be able to find a piece of thin wire, a sewing needle or something similar that fits the groove in your edger and use that to sharpen the tool. Now this will only work for the tools that have the rounded groove on the bottom of the edger. For the ones that are flat on the bottom, I think you are going to need a small jewelers file and sharpen it at the correct angle. Hope this makes some sense and if not, I hope others will jump in and tell how they do it.
