What Leather Do I Use?

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I am looking at making some notebooks and iPad/laptop cases for some friends and a lady in the local leather shop (who was extremely UN-helpful) said I could not use certain leather because it would stain the paper. Is this true? To make Notebook covers what sort of leather/Tanning do I want to look at??

Also what sort of thickness should I be looking at? Im not doing carving initially, maybe just some stamping.

If i wanted to put a nice liner in the leather iPad case, what would be best suited for this.

Thanks in advanced for the help, to new people leather craft has so many different types and terminologies it is easy to get lost

Rob

Some of the oil chrome tanned leather meant for outside gear would probably do something to paper since it leaves residue on pretty much everything at first.

You would use veg tanned leather if you're going to stamp anything. Latigo, harness, bridle leather would be fine as well if you're not stamping anything. As for thickness it's whatever you would want. I would probably go for 5/6 ounce.

You can line with anything really. Cloth, felt, another type of leather, the same type of leather.

Do not line with a dyed split suede, they can sometimes bleed as well. You may want to line with a 1.5 - 2 oz veg tan or pigskin.

What a coincidence. I am writing an article regarding this exact subject. I looked at the Weaver catalog and kind of reversed the info.I suggest you get in touch with the good folks at Weaver Leather and ask for their exert opinion.
