Jeff Hilden Report post Posted February 2, 2015 Hello everyone,I am a total novice when it comes to leather crafting. I would like to put a nice "stamp" on some luggage tags, and I'm wondering if anyone can give me guidance on this. I would probably do about 20 tags a month (max), with (i.e.) 3 initials on each. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I really want to "stamp/emboss" these with some kind of tool or machine, as I don't trust myself to do it "by hand". Attached is a pic of the look I'm trying to achieve. I am really not sure where to start (or even where to look); can anyone help? Thanks! Jeff
thefanninator Report post Posted February 2, 2015 I've never done it but I've looked into it a little. A quick search of hot foil stamping machine brings up a few companies. http://www.kwik-print.com http://www.aamstamp.com http://www.hotstampsupply.com
camano ridge Report post Posted February 2, 2015 What you are wanting to do is called Hot Foil Stamping or Embossing. Do a search on you tube for hot foil stamping or hot foil embossing, you will see how it is done. There are hot foil machines that will cost several hundred to thousands. A cheaper way is similar to a branding ironplacing foil on the leather then pressing down with the branding iron. You might call these people and tell them what you want to do. http://lwleathers.com/products/leather-embossing They advertise on these forums at the top of the page. I forgot about them. They are much more affordable.
chrstn53 Report post Posted February 2, 2015 If you expect to do 20 or so luggage tags a month, your better off picking up an old Kingsley, Howard or kwickprint heat embossing machine. If you do some research on the brands you will come across the units and type at a good price. Last year I picked up a Kingsley machine with 16 different boxes of type large and small for $400. I normally use my machine to brand the leather with the initials and since I have started the service, my sales have increased 20 fold. The only foil you can use on leather is 23k gold foil since all other foils will eventually turn green. The pros for using one of the above machines, is that you can find hundreds of different style and sized letters at reasonable prices ($20-$40) a box with 4 to 5 types for each letter. Hope this helps
