Tandy has a great book that covers all styles of branding , it has good understandable illustrations. It's called Leather Braiding by Bruce Grant. About 200 pages. Very good and covers it all.

When I braid dog leashes I braid the handle first... you start in the middle of your strings(half way point). When you braid the handle then bring all strings together to braid the leash part. On the back braiding you will braid back through yourself. I use hemostats, they work really well. Hope this helps.
