Members Colt Hammerless Posted January 29, 2014 Report That's fantastic Frank! Just seeing the thumbnail image at the top of the page caused me to reflexively click on the image. What leather did you use, and what dye? Love the white stitching. Paul Quote
Frank Posted January 29, 2014 Report Paul, Thanks very much for the compliments. The leather is the drum dyed russet from Wickett & Craig. It got the nice red color from being oiled and set in the sun for a day. Otherwise the standard russet is almost a saddle tan color without tanning in the sun. The original color of the russet without tanning can be seen on either one of the Main & Winchester style holsters that I have in the Album too. Frank Quote
Members Colt Hammerless Posted January 29, 2014 Report Ah, W&C Russet skirting, my favorite! I have another piece of that on order right now actually. Most the stuff I've made with it has been dyed, but I do have a piece or two that were simply oiled. Next one I do like that, I'll leave in the sun for a while. Plenty of that here in AZ (it's going to be 80 on Thurs.) Paul Quote
Frank Posted January 29, 2014 Report Paul, I have been using the W/C Brown, Russet, Chestnut, and Oak skirting since I started. I think after this rig I can drop the Chestnut color from my inventory since I can get the sun to do that to the Russet. Glad you got the warm weather. Plan on moving to AZ in the future. Can't stand the cold anymore! Frank Quote
Members Colt Hammerless Posted January 29, 2014 Report I bought a chestnut skirting belly on my last order, just to take a look at the color, and to have some scrap for making patterns. I probably won't order more. If it was a bit darker, it would be a nice stand in for mahogany, but it's a bit too light for that. I love the color on your rig there though! Yeah, I saw in another thread that you're planning on moving to Sierra Vista someday. My best friend lives in Hereford, on the south side of SV. It can get a bit cold, but nothing like what you're experiencing now. Pretty nice in the summer compared to Phoenix also. Paul Quote
Frank Posted January 30, 2014 Report Paul, If you oil the chestnut, then seal it within a couple of hours with Bag Kote, it will darken considerably. Since I can get relatively the same color with russet in the sun, there is no need for me to buy it any longer. As far as Sierra Vista, what you folks call a bit cold, we call nice spring weather here...lol. 50 degrees and they are wearing shorts, tee shirts, and flip flops here. Quote
