Fiebrings Leather Dye

With Fiebings leather dye do I have to use thier reducer?

Is there something else I can use to reduce the dye?

Also what is good for cleaning brushes?

I found some isopropyl alcohol I had stored away. I'll try that also.

I have some reducer, but never have used it. As for my brushes, I use "The Masters" Brush Cleaner and Preserver. It does as the title says and works on every kind of dye and paint I have used. Plus, you can put some on after cleaning to keep it preserved and coated. I was given my 1.5" "snuff" can size by a guild member who happens to do a lot of other styles of painting. Any art store or Hobby Lobby carries it.

It's like oil and water don"t mix.........and water doesn't clean oily things very well. Alcohol and water only mix sightly better than oil and water. Feibing's dyes are solvent {alcohol} or oil based, denatured alcohol works on both types of Feibing's dies. Mike

I recently got some alcohol based dye from a company that went out of business. I have no background info on it except that it was for shoes and fabrics. I have never used alcohol dye before. I have only used ecoflo. I was playing around with the alcohol dye and supersheen seems to work as a finish. Of course I don't know about the longterm performance of supersheen on an alcohol dye. What do you use as a finishing coat for alcohol dye? And if I understand correctly I would use regular alcohol to thin it? What do you use for a storage container for the leftover dye? and where do you dispose of dye you want to throw away? Thanks for any info.

This is just my opinion, okay! If you are thinking of spirit dye (alcohol) based? My understanding based on reading and talking with users is that it will last longer. Now, I use those little salsa cups from a take out place and a glass dropper (got 4 at CVS and WalGreens) and transfer enough amounts needed to do my job. I usually pour enough that I usually have for instance a back ground amount almost down packed. I have eco-dyes, but I am not comfortable with the use of these dyes. I really like my conversion to Fiebings dye plus a good coat of a neat lac type product or Tan Kote (for inside since it is not waterproof) finishes it perfect!

I also like the Fiebings Antique paste after converting from Eco Flo Antique gels.

As for the master cleaner, I found a bar of soap type at Hobby Lobby and purchased their last one. When I am too lazy to put gloves on for quick jobs, I use the bar to clean up......nice and easy!

Only use denatured alcohol. Isopropyl is diluted with water and will disrupt the suspension of the dye molecules. Denatured is ethanol based and has the same specific gravity of Fiebing's dye. Hence the reason that Fiebing's dye reducer is nothing but denatured alcohol.
