  1. So you are saying that you literally lay your item on the wax and punch right into the way like a rubber punch pad or something like that ?
  2. Beehive, Yes I am realizing all the things you just mentioned, but it doesn't discourage me at all! I have always loved the process of creating. My main hobby has always been cooking and I love putting in the extra effort of making everything from scratch and enjoying the process. It is simply that I have not had much experience with leather yet to fully appreciate the labor involved. As I watch videos online to see how things are made and to learn proper techniques, I do realize that they are not showing the entire process and they are making it seem "perfect" and easy. What they don't show are the things I am asking about and how to overcome them. So I am so glad that this forum exists for me to have a platform to soak in the knownledge from others who have already gone through some of these learning hurdles. As far as the tools, I just wanted to make sure I was not shooting myself in the foot so to speak by buying the cheapest tools to try out leatherworking. So many times in other projects when I would try cheaper tools it would make the job miserable. Thank you so much for the great information and tips.
  3. Ahh ok, thanks.
  4. Thanks guys!
  5. Do you guys use the dull tip or the sharp tip needles? I ordered a thinner thread recently and I was not able to get the dull needle through it.
  6. So the other day I was using the amazon ones, and it was going through 3 layers of 4ish oz veg tanned leather, I could barely get the darn thing pulled out of the leather!
  7. Thanks for the insite on the irons. Trying to pick things up in moderation. It gets quite pricey quick!
  8. Wow really thats it ? I am going to try this on some scrap when I get home today.
  9. Good Morning All, I was just wondering if I could get a little advice. I currently have these Chisels (I am returning them for a set on Buckleguy), however Whenever I stitch, my needle gets stuck when it gets to the thread. Is this due to the chisels im using or could it be due to the size of the needle thread? These are the needles / thread im using: It seems when I watch others sew on youtube that their needle/thread goes right through no problem. Thanks in advance! Josh PS these are the chisels I have on order:
  10. Here is a wallet I made last night. Thanks for all the help.
  11. Thanks guys, I have a pattern and found out there is a Tandy Leather store not that far from me. I appreciate all the advice.
  12. Thank you guys. I am going to look into this. -Josh
  13. Good Evening Everyone, I was reading up on the different types of leather and the different thicknesses, however, I am not sure I completely understand how to order leather. I have purchased some cheaper leather on buckleguy for learning some techniques. I was hoping to get some leather to make a small laced bag, but I am not sure how much leather i would need. I think I want some chrome tanned leather around 7 or 8 oz, but even having a template to work from I am not sure what to buy (size or brand). Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks! Josh
  14. Ok thanks for the advice ! I will try it again with your suggestions and let you know. Josh
  15. Hey everyone, I just started my first project to being my leatherworking journey. The wallet I am trying to make is lined, and when i try to fold the shell, these weird creases/wrinkles are forming. Please see the attached photos. Does anyone know why this is happening? The two pieces are glued together. Thank you! Josh
