@Tugadude has suggested we setup an area for stitching irons, etc. It fits under Sewing Leather, so rather than a whole new forum area, here it is. For this thread, its main purpose is to collect and provide information. Posts that go off topic will be removed. So a couple rules for this thread. Reviews and information should list manufacturer's names, locations and model or item description so they can be found by other members. A link to the company website would be fine. Don't link to a specific page, keep it at the top domain level so the link is less likely to be broken when someone decides to reorganize their website or offerings. Photos should be p…

Through the wonders of the internet and what I call internetworking, we have a series of videos made by LW member Nigel Armitage for another member. There have been a LOT of questions about the basics of hand stitching and I thought the entire site could benefit from Nigel's expertise. Take a look at his work and his other videos to see why I am impressed with his work. Thanks Nigel for taking the time to create these videos and I am looking forward to the next installment! http://youtu.be/zeQt-nvLWyo http://youtu.be/xS1j_Uifmhw

Okay - I got my Boss, have practiced a bunch with it - at least to the point of using the entire sample bobbin that shipped with the machine, and even made a quick sheath for my round knife. I'm using the standard leather needle and thread that was included with the machine, which I believe is 277. Last night I attempted to sew my first holster with it. It's obvious I needed a little more practice... One thing I quickly found was that I needed to plan the direction I sew better as the heel of the foot dug into the leather pretty severely where it wasn't flat (was sewing an avenger style). I also think I need to use the overstitch wheel to mark my stitch locations so I ca…

Hello fellow leathersmiths. I decided to post this hand stitching guide to hopefully help others avoid the trial and error and weeping and wailing that I encountered when learning how to hand stitch properly and to humbly attempt to contribute to the forum which I perceive as a wonderful thing. If only this type of information had been around when I was first learning! My heartfelt thanks to you Johanna! I offer my apologies beforehand if any of this has been previously addressed as I'm sure that some of it has been. This guide is not meant to be all encompassing but merely to add to the wealth of information readily available in books. I very highly recommend the boo…

I know this is a long shot, but does anybody have any examples (or any advice on where I can find examples) of stitches made with a 794 spear point needle? I'm curious to see how they look when compared to the 794 triangle points. Thanks! -Adam

Can anyone help with the best type of needle for top stitching or is standard good enough and should I be using a thinner thread in the bobbin as some people have mentioned to me. I am using 20s for the top stitch and the same for bobbin. I am using a Brother unison feed Thank you

My question... Does it matter how the thread is taken off the spool? Does one-way cause the thread to twist more than the other? I am asking because I know there is a proper way to spool a fishing reel, so line twist doesn't happen. Is it the same with sewing machines, or does it even matter? Anyway i built this spool stand for my new-to-me Boss after I noticed the line twisted up going through the first whachmajiggy. The machine came with the wire thing above the spool method. BTW i have to say this machine and all the accessories were given to and shipped to my house by one of our forum members for free. Can you believe that? he messaged me, thinking I w…

Hey all, OK quick question… Let’s take a hypothetical here: Let’s say that we’re stitching something long and straight like a belt or purse strap, and our stitch groove has a wobble or so. Is it aesthetically better to keep a straight stitch line, or to follow the groove that isn’t necessarily straight? May you never burn your bacon, AZR
