  1. I'm new to making holsters, but not to wearing them. As was said above you need some more room to grasp the grip, and reinforce the edges with your stitching. Also a steeper angle twords the strong hand will aid in a more natural draw stroke and easier presentation. Look at Galcos SOB for an example of the angle. Be caefull with clips on an OWB they get to flopping around from the few I tried and hurt the draw stroke. Lastly, reinforce the mouth of the holster to aid in reholstering after a presentation. Good start though. Make sure your cousin knows the dangers of that weapon placement to his spine in case of a fall or blow to the back. Sorry just the paramedic coming out...Dave This is a Galco SOB right hand draw.
  2. Thanks for the kind words and encouragement. Any holster will cause blue wear lined or not, just the nature of the beast. I do like the look of lined holsters, just wanted to make sure this was something I could do passable well before sinking a ton of money into different leathers, tools etc. I do agree retention is more important on horseback, I spend most of my time on the ground or in vehicles working the farm, ride more for pleasure. Anything especially hard about rifle scabbards, or just more stitching? Thanks again Dave
  3. This is my first holster, and my first time working leather since I was in Boy Scouts years ago. This was more of an experiment as to what the pattern I made would actually produce, rather than making a "masterpiece". This is also my first attempt at wet molding/boning. The goal of the pattern is a John Wayneish holster to wear on a seperate gunbelt in the field and on horse back. More of a working rig. I molded in the detail to provide retention without a thong. It is vegitanned 9/10oz shoulder finished with linseed oil, no lining. Let me know how to improve. Any help on stitchng and getting a better finish on the flesh side would be appreciated. Thanks Dave P.S. for the gun guys thats a Lipseys limited edition flattop in 44spl.
  4. Just ordered the Bianchi set. The chicago screws is a good idea, but I'd like to stick with stitching. Any other ideas to work with untill the dvd's get here?
  5. As much as I'd like to say its mine, that just an example of want I want to do. Need help attaching the belt loop retention strap.
  6. Hey all, been lurking for a while, but first post. I'm interested in building some holsters of the John Wayne persuasion. I've worked uot making my patterns and stiching, but the retaining strap that encircles the body of the holster and attaches to the belt loop has me stumped. How does it attach to the flap and allow stitching, it looks like te body of the holster would get in the way. Thanks for all the help in advance....Dave
