    Making pretty and practical bags
  1. Tack Knut, ska kolla vad dom har. Får nog experimentera lite med olika trådar för att se vad som kan funka.
  2. I have two older Pfaffs, 141 and 335. Neither of them have wax pots. Can waxing the linen thread become a problem if I want to sew with unwaxed thread later? Is it only the top thread that is waxed, not the bobbin thread?
  3. Hello everyone! I've been sewing with regular fabrics on a machine forever and I've done some handsewing with leather, now I want to sew leather on the machine too. In particular I would like to be able to use linen thread on the machine too, but there are some things I've been wondering about. When handsewing you first make a stitch groove, is that used when machine sewing too? You always vax the thread when handsewing, what do you do when machine sewing? What about the size of the thread? Anything else that's good to now when using linen thread? Frida

    Quality hardware

Thanks so much for all the suggestions! I would like my hardware to be from one supplier and I would like to be able to tell my customers where everything comes from, so right now my two main alternatives are Abbey Saddlery and www.poursin-paris.fr. Now when I've know more or less what materials I can and want to use, I have to work on the designs, and then decide on exactly what hardware to us. By the way, I've ordered leather from Tärnsjö Garveri and while I don't have much experience from working with leather, I really do think it looks really nice and has a high quality. Thanks again, I love this forum.

    Quality hardware

Thanks so much Marcel! I've searched the net and this forum, but I hadn't seen those shops before, or I've visited Skindhuset in Copenhagen, but somehow I forgot about them now when I was searching like mad for hardware.

    Quality hardware

In need hardware for my bags. Rivets, dees, buckles, swivel snaps etc. Preferably in solid brass and/or stainless steel. I've found leather and fabrics that I can buy directly from the manufacturers here in Sweden, but I'm totaly lost in the hardware department. I really like what I can see in the Weaver catalog online, but they are in the States, I'm in Sweden. Shouldn't I be able to find something a bit closer? By the way, I have my own company, so that wont be a problem. Thanks for any help! Frida
  7. Thanks for the info Steve! Then I wont bother with the Singer. I'm going to look at the Pfaffs tomorrow and I really want the 335 and I'll guess I'll see what the 141 is like . I've noticed that I'll probably need 3-phase, which is a bit of a problem, but I have acess to it so I'll find a way to solve it. From browsing the web I got the impression that most machines use 3-phase, but perhaps it's a difference between UK and Sweden. I've used industrial machines in school before, but I didn't paid any attention to the power supply then.
  8. Thanks Regis! I'm in Sweden, and the descriptions in the ads aren't that informative. The first link shows some sort of Pfaff 335 which I've seen mentioned on this form. That ad is also for a Pfaff 141, (there's a photo of that one too) which I haven't seen any discussions about. The same goes for the Singer. If anyone has any information on those two it would be great. The Pfaffs have been used by a shoemaker so they have been used for leather and heavier fabrics, but of course I'll bring some of the leather I'll want to work with when I'll try them out.
  9. Hi everyone! This is my first post, but it wont be the last. I've decided to start to work with leather too recently (I've been sewing in regular fabrics forever), and to make a small business out if it. Therefore I need one or two machines to help me. I'm going to look at two Pfaffs soon, but since I have very little experience in the area I thought I should ask for an opinion from someone who knows a bit more than me. The machines in question are labelled Pfaff 33517B H21 and Pfaff 141-6/01BLN. Here's a link to the ad with photos: http://www.blocket.se/vasterbotten/Industri__och_skomakarmaskiner_23561612.htm I'm going to make bags from upholstery cowhides. There's also a Singer that looks interesting up for sale. Singer 132K. Here's the ad: http://www.blocket.se/vasterbotten/Symasin_Industri_23214076.htm Any thoughts? Is there anything in particular I should look at when I try the Pfaffs? Thanks for the help!
