  1. Ok, So I just bought a new (to me) Consew 206 RB-5. It came with a single needle and no thread. Should I get an assortment of needles and thread sizes, and if so, where do I start (no previous sewing experience). I like the look of thicker threads (like those on car leather upholstery).

Can anyone with this machine give me a tip on this, and maybe point me in the direction of a needle and thread supply place? I am in South Florida (Ft. Lauderdale)

    Many thanks,

    Fred

    For thread try

  2. Years ago I saw a product with which you could make your own craftaids.

I believe it was something thicker then tracing film.

    Anyone have any ideas?

I might have to go thru my old mags and find that old ad.

I'm sure they were bought out and eliminated, ouch!

  3. Copyright issues have been discussed in depth Here.

To be on the safe side, get a 'permission slip' on school letterhead for your 'one off' item. If there is an interest in the item, or a sudden market for them, offer the school a royalty on realized sales for a limited license agreement ( 5% sound good?). You shouldn't be out any money up front, it keeps you legal, and you might even get orders from the school itself.

Sure, you could make it, but will the one purse pay you enough to cover attorney's fees if you do have to go to court? If the school says 'No', then you have to explain to the customer that you can't ethically take the school's logo without permission.

I sent a Email to the Dean, lol.

I will see if he replies.

    Thanks for the responce.

  4. I am a fair weather crafter.

So I found this roll-top desk and removed the pigeon hole dividers,

cut and drilled 4 x 4's to fill the area.

I marked the tool holders to make it easier to find the tool I need.

I added a light up under and a magnifier light.

The drawers are handy to hold most of my other tools, etc.

Just close the top when company is coming.....LOL

I read on here that some leatherworkers have limited areas to work in.

I thought this idea might help.

  5. Jim,

I don't care for Carve Ease personally. I have tried it and just don't see much benefit. I get as good a result by adding a few drops of Joy dish soap to my water pan. Sometimes I also will use a piece of trimmed wool skin to apply a light coat of Ivory soap lather (bar) to the surface of my leather before cutting. I think it helps when cutting "sticky" leather. Of course I case my leather when ever I have the opportunity and that does more good than anything else, in my opinion.

    Hope this helps.....

    Bobby

    Thanks for your reply Bobby

  6. Hey Jim, take a look at your finger nails. I have to keep mine trimmed and filed, or they will make markes. One other thing, if you wear rings, take them off. Just about anything that touches the leather when it is cased will put a mark on it. Billy P

    Thanks Billy,

I think your right! I noticed the way I hold my tools is allowing my nail to mark the leather.

I just filed my small nail smooth.

Next step will be surgical gloves, lol

  7. Ok, this is amy first post, not sure if I did it right.

I"m not satisfied with my water base dyes so I am thinking of switching to Fiebings.

I found that sewwhatsupplies.com sells it for 2.99 for 4 oz bottles. Best price I can find.

I want to buy an assortment of colors, not sure which ones to get yet.

I want to know the differance between Black and USMC Black.

    Any input would be appreciated,

    Thank you, Jim
