I have done a lot of searching and reading different threads on this site. I notice that many people use an airbrush to dye their leather and they achieve a more even coat. Does this airbrush process work around tooling? Has anybody achieved success with this? Also, do most people apply background dye with a paintbrush? Thanks!!

No chance of resist on the background. My process is to case the leather, carve and tool, dye background, oil, neat lac, antique, sew, edges. On the oxalic acid, do apply it before or after tooling the leather? I have the oa, but I have tried using it and really did not notice much of a difference. How much oa crystals and how much water in the solution? Thanks!

Ok, so a little background info first. I use Hermann Oak leather from Sheridan and Fiebings pro oil dye. This particular background is dyed mahogany. I am having trouble getting the dye to be even, if that makes sense. It comes out blotchy and uneven. I have trouble with this using black as well. And it doesn't matter if I do two or three coats. I apply the dye in the background with paint brushes. I have tried different methods such as oiling before and after I apply the dye. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!!

I have two dye questions, and I would appreciate some advice to help me out with my problem: 1) First, I have lots of trouble with my black dye. It does not penetrate the leather very well, and rubs off very easily. How can I make it penetrate the leather and not rub off? I have not had any trouble with any other colors besides black. 2) Second, I am also having trouble with some of my pieces that I dye coming out blotchy. The dye is not even throughout the whole piece. Some spots are darker and some are lighter. It just has a blotchy look. Please Help!! Thanks!!

All of the pieces that I complete come out too dark. I am using good hermann oak leather. I want a lighter brighter look to my finished work. Here is my process: 1. Tool my Work 2. Use any dye needed for background 3. A coat of neatsfoot oil 4. A coat of fiebings tan kote 5. Then i antique with fiebings cardovan 6. Another coat of tan kote Is there anything that I am doing wrong, and how can I not make the finished products look so dark? I am going for a brighter almost golden finish. Thanks in advance
