  1. Hi Dirtclod, it will be a while before I am game to put photos of anything on here (I am very new to all this) but I hope I will have something worth showing one day.

Hi Ron! A fellow Aussie...awesome! I was worried I might be the only one on here :P Great to meet you! We live on the Vic/NSW border. I'd love to know where you source your leather and tools if you have somewhere you can recommend?

    Cheers!

    Teresa.

We love that country down your area , I get all my gear from { http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com.au/en-aud/home/home.aspx } I joined their elite club and get around 30% off most stuff . they are fast and very polite as well helpful . They have a free call number you can call to ask questions , Tell em Ron from Mudgee sent ya lol . I have just put a handbag into our local show and got 2nd prize .. Send me an email and we can keep in touch ronnbarb9@bigpond.com .

I used to deal with Birdsalls but found they buy from Tandy then sell it to you, so you know what that means hey. They gotta get a bite of the cherry too .. So I've cut out the middle man .

    Cheers

    Ron

  2. Hi everyone, my name is Teresa and I live in Australia in a small country town. I just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed this forum since stumbling across it. I am a little overawed by the quality of work being shown on here :notworthy: but hopefully, in time, I might be able to produce something nice enough to use or maybe give away as gifts or even sell to someone.

I am passionate about my dogs (field trial labs and show whippets) and have had horses most of my life so leather goods just seem to go hand in hand with these hobbies. I've always loved quality leather collars and leads and have owned some lovely horse gear. It's my interest in showing whippets that has finally inspired me to stop admiring and actually have a go at making some of these items for myself, specifically sighthound collars and braided/beaded show leads. I've just ordered some tools and goods online and once they arrive, there will be no stopping me for good or bad!

I look forward to asking lots of questions and hope that there will be plenty of feedback to help me along. :helpsmilie:

    Cheers!

    Teresa

  3. I'd never heard of this product so I just looked it up on the Feibings website. I found Feibings Mink Oil liquid and it looks like it has Neatsfoot oil in it but it also has stuff to waterproof the leather, so I think it would block antiques or dyes if they are water based. I but Neatsfoot oil on after carving and before antiques or dyes, and the idea is to restore some of the natural oils the leather has lost in working the material. I think the mink oil would mess up your finishing steps that come later. You could try it on a small scrap piece to see how much trouble it will be. I think the mink oil might be a good final finish. You might try asking in the finishing forum to see if anyone there has experiece with it.

The Sheridan Style book is a great resource. I really learned a lot from it and still refer to it.

Let me know how the mink oil works out.

    Bob

    Thanks Bob.

I think I'll stick with the neatsfoot and use the mink on the finish . Thanks again for you advice and help

    Ron

  4. Hi Watersnake,

I get the Leather Crafters and Saddlers Journal and they often have articles with carving patters. Usually their patterns consist of specific parts of the saddle (a fender for example) but I think they have covered all the various parts of the saddle at one time or another. They are a great resource for different styles of carving patters. You might be able to find a collection of back issues on eBay. Also, the journal sells copies of back issues. They may be able to recommend issues they have in stock that cover saddle or saddle bag carving patterns.

The Journal can be reached at this link: http://www.leathercraftersjournal.com/

    Hope this helps,

    Bob

Thanks again Bob , also while I'm here ,I was reading Sheridan Style carving by Bill Gardner and Clinton Fay , in it they say to put neatsfoot oil on after the carving is finished , before the antique is applied .. Could I use Fiebings milk oil instead ..

    Thanks mate

    Ron

  5. Australia calling,

I have seen fully carved saddles done in the sheridan style floral , Could anyone tell me where on line I could get large patterns for the floral work on a project this size . The only patterns I have found are for notebooks , billfolds . I would like something for a large hand bag or saddle bags . Also are there any craftaids out there with the sheridan floral

    Thanks

    Ron

  7. My 2 cents worth.....

Aside from the better quality (and Barry King's tools are excellent, I love them!) another difference is that the Sheridan style tools are a little different than what you can get with Tandy. Bevelers have a steeper angle to them that makes them easier to use in tight areas. The veiners I use are much thinner than what is available from Tandy, again lending them to use in tight or compact tooling. My bargrounders have much smaller holes than the old Tany ones my wife has, and I'm not even sure what kind of bargrounder is available from Tandy right now. Also, there are a couple of tools like the leaf liner and the center shader that Tandy doesn't currently make. You can certainly make good floral designs with the Tandy tools, but to do true Sheridan style it's hard to do without the specialized ones. I would be lost without my Barry King bevelers.

I have heard rumors that Tandy is going to release Sheridan style tools, but they haven't shown up in my nearby store yet.

    Hope this helps,

    Bob

    Thanks Bob

I have had no response from my email , Do you or anyone have some way of contacting Barry King's tools

    Thank you Ron

  8. Here's his site. http://www.barrykingtools.com/ Just let him know the size of the carvings you intend to do. Wallets, bags or coasters, etc. Then he can recommend the sizes.

    Or check this http://www.barryking...om/sizelist.htm

Thank you kindly the emails on the way

When you contact Barry King....ask them for the Sheridan Tooling Starter set. They had them at the last show I went to.

Thank you kindly the emails on the way

  9. I would strongly recommend you to email Barry King and ask for recommendations.

I was on a very tight budget myself, but knowing that Craftools would be a waste of money, I gave Barry my budget, and he took his recommended tool list from the site and whittled it down to fit my budget.

The tools are worth every cent I spent on it.

Besides the crisp impressions, there is also another practical consideration. I practise whenever I have spare time, and in between these sessions, the Craftools just corrodes away. With Barry's stainless steel tools, I don't have to worry about my stamping tools corroding.

thank you kindly Do you know his addy mate ..

  12. Don't dare attempt to sharpen!!! They are antiques! I beleive they are anyways!!! I have one, and prefer it rather than the ceramic ones I have, and ceramics don't need sharpening either!!!

    Thank you

Me too have a couple of them :-)

I only strop them on leather, thats enough to get them sharp again.
