  1. Thanks, I figured out that I was working the leather too dry.
  2. I had a basket weave stamp from their deluxe kit break on me, and the camo tool handle bend. I was working with the leather atop a steel roller bearing, I believe it was way too hard a surface. They replaced my broken and bent tools, and I cut off a section of a large 1" thick sheet of plastic board, like a cutting board and used it, and finished all the things in the kit without any problems, and the tooling was uniform, deep, and the tools stayed in good shape. I am remodeling my home so can't invest in a quarts plate quite yet so I'll make do with the plastic. I will never again do another check book cover as I don't have the patience to do all the fancy lacing, I will do wallets and book covers, etc... Stuff I can lace with the waxed thread with the saddle stitch, I think the other lace looks very corny anyway.
  3. My basket weave stamp broke as I was about halfway finished with a checkbook cover, I will take the kit back to Tandy after the 1st. Thanks for the help.
  4. My basket weave stamp broke as I was about halfway finished with a checkbook cover, I will take the kit back to Tandy after the 1st. Thanks for the help.
  5. Sorry for starting a new thread, but I couldn't figure out how to edit the title of an existing thread. I purchased a Tandy deluxe starter set, and bent a camo tool while making a small cell phone holder. The tools/stamps in the kit are pretty skinny, I'd like to find some that are a little heavier and more solid. Any links would be appreciated. Are the Tandy kit tools the same as the tools you buy seperate from them in their store, or are they all skinny like those in the kits? Thank you.
  6. It's the wallet in the deluxe starter kit, and I thought the thread would be cheap enough that for a beginner they'd add a little extra.
  7. Thank you. There also wasn't enough waxed string to finish the wallet, I have to wait until after the new year to go get some more to finish the billfold.
  8. I ended up with a slight bend in one of my tools while I was tooling/stamping a cell phone case. I realize that I might have been hitting the tool at an angle or holding it at an angle some times but, I'd think that a good quality tool would not bend when hit with a very light plastic mallet. I figure that quality tools have thicker handles on them, at least I hope they do. It caused me not to tool a leather wallet deep enough tonight so the basket weave is not as sharp and detailed as it should be. Any advice, other than get quality tools? LOL
  9. Last night I cased the key fob just right, it tooled very nicely, except I went too deep with the seeder once and almost cut clean through, I stained it and it looks good. Gave it to a cousin.
  10. I've used both rounders thus far and think I may get the hang of it. I tried a rose pattern and did okay on the cutting and some of the tooling, but I have a hard time with the tiny background tool, I guess it will take a lot of practice. I need to order a lot of rounders, LOL. Thanks.
  11. I went to Tandy Leather in FT Worth today and picked up this kit: http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/en-usd/55510-00.aspx I think that for $65 dollars this kit is a bargain. I plan on making the individual pieces as late Christmas gifts, so I plan on taking my time with each piece and doing the best I can. I also got a free $10 gift card to watch the Pay to view tutorials. I am remodeling my home so it may be a while before I have a photo to post. Thank you for any advice.
  12. I was thinking of making my own also, once I get a kit, looks nice.
  13. Thank you for the pics and welcome.
  14. Thank you Ron, and good luck on your projects.
  15. Thank you for the nice welcome, there is a Tandy Leather in FT. Worth near the VA outpattient clinic, I plan on stopping to check it out on the 5th of DEC.
  16. I originally posted this in the Getting Started forum, but then I saw this forum and think this goes here, sorry for the double post and hope this is the right place. Hi everyone, I haven't done anything with leather since I was a teen in summer school when I made a nice tooled wallet. Life and the Army has kept me busy until 2002 when I was medically discharged after a neck injury and 2 surgeries. What got me interested in getting a kit and getting started is a Bible cover a friend at church made me, it is pretty nice, and I thought I'd like to get into making western styled stuff, and maybe even some biker styled accessories. I am currently remodeling my home so I am pretty busy, and pretty broke after buying supplies every two weeks, but I might squeeze a starter kit in there somewhere soon and start creating. I am seriously considering this kit here: http://www.tandyleat...d/55510-00.aspx I'm sure it is a great bargain and would give me a pretty good start, but please opine. Glad to be here, and hopefully in time I'll get a kit and have a finished photo for y'all to critique and hopefully admire. Thank you, Aaron. P.S. I am also into medievil armour as well as fantasy armour, I'd love to also get into making leather armour.
