  1. Practice, practice, and more practice. Everyone has ruined pieces during the learning process. Don't know about Florida but here Tandy gives free classes. For inspiration I look in the forum at pieces that well experienced artists have made. I will pick something I haven't made yet and make it as many times as it takes for me to be satisfied with it. have you tried a starter kit from Tandy? They come with everything you need to make several projects,(including tools). I just bought three or four tools a month and maybe a letter set a month till now I have enough to make anything. Plenty of instructional videoes on the Tandy website and Youtube also. Also, the good people on this forum are not stingy with information! Keep at it!

  2. Hi all. Had a customer ask me to make a holster for his Taurus Raging Bull 454 Casull with an 8.5 inch barrell. Tried to talk him into a crossdraw shoulder guide type holster as this thing is a small cannon. Still insisted on a holster for his belt. I made it like a buscadaro with the back (is this called an apron?) so when he gets tired of his britches falling around his ankles and consents to a shoulder holster... :) I have some leather to attach to. I think its just a show piece anyway.....

    Great looking holster!

  3. Ramblings from a old man : The radio on the table will suffer from the vibrations of pounding on the table . The tool holders will also jump around . I suggest a tool roll .You dont get to show off your tools but its efficient. I would make a wall hanging for the paper towels . Light will indeed affect your hides if its uniform darking it dont matter ,I have put mine out in the sun and got some nice effects with colour changes from the light. Nice to see a comfortable chair thats going to make working long hours pleasant. You will refine this more and more as time goes on ,all the advice given here is by those who have travelled this road before and are short cutting your journey . Fact working leather makes very fine dust gets in small places (IE the radio ) so a safer resting place is advised . My desk is a mess because I am making hundreds of things all the time so there is work in all stages its a assembly line kind of thing . So I envy your efforts and wish maybe I took more time on neatness ,but the only thing that really matters is done projects no wasted material and a payday . Thanks for the peak into your shop . Its nice you took the time to share . Good Luck !

Thanks Bluesman. The table is sturdy enough and the slab heavy enough that nothing jumps around. If I hung the paper towels on the wall they wouldn't be within arms reach. I have covered my leather stock with brown paper. Not worried about the radio, if dust kills it I'll get another, I like it within arms reach also. That way I can turn the tunes down if the phone rings or for whatever reason. Thanks for your comments and concerns!

  4. I notice you have your leather stock hanging over a rod. Two things: You probably have light on the leather, either natural and/or artificial. Get some Kraft packaging paper and hang over the leather as a shield. Second: if you wish to have your leather hanging, use spring clamps so you can hang from the edge.

Inside a dark room or closet is very good but not always possible.

Thanks for the reply 50. I don't know why light is bad for leather but I'm going to find out. It stays under lights all day 6 days a week at the leather store. But I will certainly acknowledge your experience and heed your advice. Thanks again.

  5. Lovely setup! Looks like you can reach everything from where you sit. I'm in the process of planning my workstation so I can finally clear off the kitchen table, and I hope mine will be as streamlined and organized :)

Thanks! Working on a handbag now, my first "from scratch" project. Just got all the pieces cut and the design on the leather. Will start carving and tooling tomorrow.

  6. I like this ,well done comfortable as well. Advise: something always ends up on the floor some how so a scrap piece of carpet is good if it matters. Use a close nap carpet . Being old and large I find that a quality office chair with a swivel and a tilt function makes the days pass with less pain . Best to buy these second hand ,the furniture rental people mostly rent only new stuff so when stuff is returned its often sold quickly ,just look around . About 35.00 is good . Good luck and happy working . Bluesman1951

Yes bluesman, didnt take me long to switch to an office chair, much more comfy.

  7. Got the workshop ready to start making stuff. Will probably post my first project soon for critique by the experts. Was going to use the garage but after finding out what it was going to cost to heat and cool it the practical choice was the spare bedroom. Going to do a few small projects first. Enrolled in a tooling class for next month. First big project will be a saddlebag style hand bag for my sister, I figure the best advertising is someone out there using something I made. This forum is great, a wealth of information, and the members are the best! Excited to get started!

  8. Howdy all, new member here from the DFW area of Texas. As a retired vet I've tried a couple of hobbies to stay busy. The latest was metal detecting. After a couple months of that it was apparent to me that I needed a less physically demanding hobby. Getting up and down from the ground hundreds of times a day was too much for me. So now I'm turning my garage into a workshop and am diving into leatherworking. And possibly some woodworking. My job career was mechanical/ technical so I've allways made a living with my hands and my limited brains-lol. Looking forward to learning a lot from all the members and reading a lot.
