  1. I'd love to have followed the advice above yet my pattern making skills are what could be described as shite so, if there is a practical alternative, I'd prefer that..
  2. Apologies for bumping an oldish thread.. did anyone find a rifle slip pattern? Just been bought a very nice rifle (gift from swmbo) and I'd love to make my own slip for it..
  3. Thanks again... I have enough spare to test on. So with a little luck I'll get it right before making a hash of the final product..
  4. Thanks bluesman, appreciate the comments.. Have resized some images so can show a few more bits now (my edge burnishing can be a bit erratic, especially when I run out of tragacanth.. I normally end up with beeswax and a piece of denim, frantically rubbing to get a nice shine).. I prefer to work with quality brass fittings but sometimes use stainless steel. Only reverting to nickel plated if absolutely necessary It's getting harder to get decent leather now because the price of hide has gone up a heck of a lot in the last couple of years so when I get back to it I'll just buy ready cut straps, whereas before I used to get large offcuts for 1/3 the price they are now.
  5. Hi all.. although I do a bit of basic leatherwork my main reason for joining was to ask a question. However.. now I'm here, it could be a good time to start to progress my work a bit. I have swivel knives and needles/thread but haven't invested the time to learn carving or sewing yet. So far I've made leads and collars for my own and a few friends dogs. Mostly functional stuff for hunters running dogs. My tools have been whatever I could get cheap, I've had a couple of knives made for me too (notably a cutting knife (thought I prefer razor blades) and a skiving knife). This is a lurcher 'set' that I made specially for someone.. Struggling with upload sizes, got lots more pics and will share when I have more time to fiddle with my images.
  6. Thanks TwinOaks.. Dye it is then. For spraying, would one of those plant misting sprayers handle Resolene do you think? The type that pump up to pressurise them..
  7. Hi all.. first post (and sorry it's a question already, but it's quite pressing).. I need to put a logo onto a leather bicycle seat. It's an upholstery leather, good quality, white. The logo will be in purple and on either side of the 'nose' of the saddle so will be exposed to sweat and rubbing I have a stencil so that's sorted. My initial thoughts were to use a decent permanent marker for the job so I have one of those. But now I'm not so sure. Are there better alternatives? My last (I think) 'issue' is how to protect it once it's dry. I found a bottle of Autoglym Leather Cream in my stash of car cleaning gear but that made the image smudge (on my test piece). Having googled my little socks off there were hundreds of articles on how to get ink OUT of leather but not so many on how to keep it IN.. Any product suggestions really need to be available in the UK (since that's where I'm at). Any ideas? Thanks in advance...
