Back when I was younger and had all my hair, I decided I wanted to make my own belt rather than settling for what I could get from the store. So, I asked some advice from one of them "experts." I says, "How long do I make it?" He says "Add four inches." "Mmm-kay. Add four inches to what" At which point I got a crash course in rocket science that I didn't want or need. So, I did what most folks do and measured out my old belt. That worked. But then a feller asked me to make him one. Mmm-kay. Now I'm in trouble. Moral of the story is I got tired of the hit and miss, the re-do's, and utterance of profane syllables. So, I created the little tutorial posted here and want t…

I have been tooling for many years and have always used patterns from books, pasting pictures together, etc. I have Pete Gorrell's book as well as design artistry (Baird) and 4-5 Chan Geer books. I am SO *(#)(*&$ frustrated that I can't draw a design that I like. They come out too stemmy, to much background, or usually so crowded that the stem and leaves are bigger than the flowers. IS THERE A RULE OF THUMB or at least a consensus on belt patterns!?!?! l know to start at the tip (duh!) but when drawing, do you place your flowers and leaves and fill in the blanks? and if so, do you draw the stems up from the bottom or down from the top? I know it sounds stupid but …

Kate's instructions have been copied into a PDF file A while back I had posted my biker wallet pattern, and a few people have asked me for more detailed information on how these wallets are put together, as it is not intuitively obvious from just looking at the pattern pieces. It took me a few tries to figure out the construction sequence; the pieces have to go together just right, or you paint yourself into a proverbial corner! I usually cut the interior pieces from some very light calf skin. But I'm out of that, and I really wanted to do this demo this weekend, so instead I used some light-weight chap/upholstery leather I had laying around. It does not sew up…

Hey all, Is there a semi-reliable method for altering a template for different weights, besides trial-and-error (i.e. 2-3oz vs 5-6oz)? I know many times a slight variation in final dimensions is trivial, but I’m trying to make some can koozies, which obviously need the same final dimensions. Thank you all, and may you never burn your bacon! — AZR

Hey all! So the common method recommended is to glue the paper template to backer/stiffener and there you go. A method I just stumbled upon may very well be already established, but I haven’t seen it yet. Starting with the template glued to the stiffener, I sanded the edges smooth with 220 and 400, which does give a smooth edge. I took this a step further and sealed the edges by slicking with gum trag (Tokonole is probably too expensive for the purpose). Of course this may change the seam allowance on the template (if you even use it), so I just used my wing dividers to mark a new line and move the stitch markers over. I am aware that this is basically …

This dice tray was inspired by dwarves from the lord of the rings and dungeons and dragons and it is a very fun project to make! I wanted to go for a sturdy, almost blocky look and with the outside pieces that are reminiscent of armor plates, I think it gives off a dwarven vibe. It's made out of 3mm vegetable tanned leather that has been laser engraved, and the pattern includes six different options for the engraving in the middle as well as over 20 pages of detailed instructions on how to make it, and a bonus video with additional tips and tricks for the crafting process. Check it out here: https://farfarsyxaleather.etsy.com/listing/4492097747

I use Inkscape to create my patterns. I’m doing my first project larger than 8.5x11 and I’m finding Inkscape doesn’t have a way to print on multiple pages. There is a work-around but it’s VERY clunky. So, I’m looking for recommendations. Preferably something that is open source or very cheap.
