  1. Oh I will take a stab at this

    1. Leather working is a relaxing, fun hobby for me. I use it to unwind from work and life stress and it allows me to be creative while making useful products.

    2. The demographic of this community is all over the map. From full time high end saddle and holster makers to recreational hobbyists. Education and income levels also vary widely (there is a "what do you do for a living" thread in the forum). I am a professional in healthcare with two University degrees.

    3. I enjoy making custom and fun products for my family and friends. I love working with leather; its smell, touch and feel and how malleable a medium it can be to make a vast assortment of goods through an immeasurable number of techniques. It also serves to feed my lust for cool tools and machinery and the need to spend all my disposable income

    4. There are so many things to learn and projects to tackle. Most Christmas gifts I give this year will be hand made. Although it is not an inexpensive hobby, it is easy to get into and so much to learn. This is a great website to aid that.

    Hope that helps, Scott

Thanks for responding! Will be putting this in my paper. On a seperate note do you know anyone in southeast Missouri that could show me how they do things? (long shot I know lol) Will be in St. Louis soon too so if you know anybody there that would be great too!

  2. Hey everyone! First I want to say that this is a great sub and though I have not posted anything yet I do plan to in the future but to the reason I am posting now. I am in college and for one of my classes I need to write a paper about a New Leisure Activity and I chose leatherworking. I need to Interview people who are active leatherworkers but I don't know any in my area (Southeast Missouri). If you could answer a few questions that would be great!

    1) Why do you participate in leatherworking?

    2) What would you say the demographic makeup of the community is?

    3)Why do you enjoy leatherwork?

    4) Any other thing you would like to say about the activity?

I would like to thank anyone who replies to this as it is greatly appreciated

  3. A good way to start is to buy a bifold inner from Springfield Leather Company, then cut a piece of 4/5 oz leather so that the width is the same and the length is 1/8" longer to accomodate folding the wallet, on folded items you want to add ~2X the width of the leather, since it's 4 oz, that is 8/64 (after you double it), or 1/8". Decide if you want to sew it or lace it, then dye the leather and start assembly. There will be different tool requirements depending on lacing or stitching.

    Tools needed

Straight Edge Ruler (preferrably stell with a cork back)

Sharp knife (Box Cutters work well, just make sure it's sharp)

    dye

    finish

    Tools/materials needed for lacing

    Lace 3/32" (good quality)

    lacing punch 1/8" single prong

    lacing punch 1/8" 4 prong

(A 00 hole punch can be substitued for the 2 lacing punches above)

2 prong lacing needles (at least 2)

Scratch Awl for marking leather and can be used to pull lace ends up between the leathers)

Stylus (not absolutely necessary, but better for pulling up lace ends)

    Stitching

    Diamond Awl (good quality)

    groover

    Harness Needles (at least 2)

    Thread (waxed)

    edge slicker

I probably missed an item or two, trying to keep it just to the necessities. I'm sure someone will correct any thing I missed.

    Welcome to the forum.

    Chief

Thank you very much! What type of leather should I get? Is there any way to buy leather that is not an entire sholder or side?

  4. Hellow everyone I would just like to say this is an awesome fourm with a wealth of information. So I am compleatly new to leather working. I have been reading things online over the past two weeks trying to find a winter break project "Im a sophmore in college" and have been contemplating leather work for some time. I would like to make a bifold wallet over my break that last a month. So do you think this is a good idea. If so what materials should I use, I don't have a lot of money to invest at the moment. what tools would I need for just this project? Also is there a way to get a free pattern for a bifold wallet? Thank you very much
