  1. Right. Well thanks for all your help. It sounds as if there aren't a lot of options for this machine when it comes to WF and FD. But for what it's meant to do it's just the ticket :-)
  2. Hi Gregg, Thanks for the reply! The feed dog is - if anything - slightly (Italics to indicate a miniscule amount) higher on the right side. I don't see a ready adjustment for that. It sews neoprene well - but we also call on it to sew fabric covered neoprene. Not the nylon skin on the neoprene but decorative fabric over that. The feed dog is aggressive as I'd expect to sew neoprene, and it's got a bit of a rearward pitch. I'd like to find alternative dogs that would be more akin to those used to sew fabric material. Does that make any sense?
  3. Thanks! Consew part number is 724 or 724a I can't upload a photo to this site...not sure how I can get it to you other than by direct email.
  4. Is there any Common Wisdom regarding Walking Foot machines and their performance in reverse? The 146RB is a Walking Foot machine that does both straight and zig-zag stitch. We do a lot of work with Neoprene and this machine is ideal for that. I know..this is a Leather forum..but it's the only place I know where I can come and ask questions about industrial machines. We also have a Singer 16-188 that performs well for light / medium leather work. It works well in general but not so much in reverse. I got to thinking that perhaps the reason is that the feed dog teeth are angled to the rear to such a degree that it can't get traction in reverse. I've looked online for alternative dogs and walking feet for the 146 but didn't find anything useful. Any help and guidance appreciated!
  5. This is not a leather project but the skill set and equipment are the same. We're located in Metro Denver. We make gun holsters using Rec Fabrics. We have a terrific stitcher working with us but he gets busy with other clients so we're looking for someone else we can work with as well. Cut pieces are provided, the tasks are to sew on an edge binding then fold and sew up to completion. Remote wouldn't work as the shipping would make the cost prohibitive. If this is of interest please reply here or directly via email Thanks! Peter CTBSemail@Gmail.com
  6. Auction closes in a couple hours - looks like it'll go up over $200! Another Thompson popped up on our local Craigslist board With Monster wheel and all the trimmings for $425
  7. No affiliation - certainly not mine. There's a Thompson Mini on Shopgoodwill http://www.shopgoodwill.com/viewItem.asp?ItemID=14545997 It's here in Denver. I went and had a look - it appears to be in great condition It's in the original carton with original packing foam - has the manual and all. Not something I could use but somebody here might want it. They will ship
  8. Hadn't thought of sharpening conduit but I can see how that could work. I've sent Bruce a PM...if I can get a single 1" I'll take it. I don't need a whole set :-)
  9. There are a lot of punch sets like that one - I just don't know if they'll work well on leather of that thickness. Hoping to hear from somebody who has tried them :-)
  10. Seeking advice to find the best way to achieve a 1" hole in 6-8 oz leather. I can't seem to find a hammer driven pnch that large. Is 1" too large for a manual punch? Any help appreciated!
  11. http://minneapolis.c...4108252216.html Durkopp Patcher on a treadle stand for $195! Not mine - no affiliation - nowhere near me - Dang!!
  12. Indeed - it looks like a repaint. I wonder why somebody would go to the trouble?
  13. And I think that's what I'll do. Interesting though. I was unaware of this class of machine prior to this. Never had any reason to look into them, In the words of Emil Faber, "Knowledge is Good" ! And besides... $50!
  14. Thanks Wiz! Any idea what the maximum thread size would be?
  15. I have not tested it. I was enroute to a job and didn't have a lot of time. Everything turns over but there's no thread holder etc.. I'll have to rig it up this week and see what and how it does. What's it used for in shoe making? This would be the first time an "industrial" at a yard sale turned out to be something other than this...
  16. The garage sale ad on Craigslist said ,,,industrail (sic) sewing machine so of course - since I was going to be within a mile - I stopped by. Next thing I knew I was driving away with this thing in my van. A quick check of my wallet revealed that I did not pay a lot - so at least I have that going for me. It's a Singer 269W7 which, apparently, is a Shoe Tacker. Having never worked on shoes, and being a total novice to leather swing in general,I have no idea what I might use it for. I mainly thought the stand would be good for the Adler 30-1 I acquired last week. Now that one I understand :-) Any information or guidance will be most appreciated!
  17. As a person starting out in leather work I'm thrilled to have access to the Columbine Leather Guild's Rendezvous! I've been holding off on buying any meaningful tools in deference to possibly doing so at the show. I'm looking for good basic equipment as well as materials for cutting, stitching and dyeing. Possibly also for some embossing but at this point I'm not focused too much on tooling. If you were going to the show - who would you go to and for which tools/supplies? (I'll be stopping to see Bob Kovar for sure to thank him for the help with the new servo motor! ) Thanks for any input! 2013 IFoLG Vendor List Makers Leather Supply—Chris Andre Pro Series Tools—Bob Beard Leather Wranglers—Paul Zalesak Barry King Tools—Barry King Bob Park Custom Leather–Bob Park Tandy Leather Factory-Patrick Knapp Leather Burnishers-Beary LaBarre Roz Kaohn-Roz Kaohn A.R.T. 18. Wiz, your positive review in a previous post was a major factor in my decision. That and the time Bob took to help me understand the differences in motors, speed controls and features. Bob even offered to bring it along with him to the Rendevous here in Denver later this month so I could pick it up and save the freight. I opted to pay UPS so I can get the motor sooner and get it set-up - but that was a heck of a nice offer! I look forward to meeting him at the show!
  19. Hmm - the negative aspect of the brake isn't something I'd thought of - although I'm so new at this I'm surprised I can think at all.
  20. Looking to upgrade the Artisan 797ab to a Servo Motor. Looking at two motors - one is the ConSew CS1000 which is available with needle positioner the other is this 3/4 horse motor which has a brake. I've never had a machine that had either feature so I'm unsure if the needle positioner is worthwhile option. The brake - in theory - would be really nice expecially for a rank beginner like myself. I also like the price of the brake motor. I spoke with the seller of the brake motor - they say they've had good success with that motor and use it on their refurbished machines. The third consideration is the ability to do the DIY speed control mod. Looks like they both have the same style of optical speed control Anybody have an opinion? Thanks!! EDIT: I made my decision after a conversation with Bob Kovar. I ordered his Family Sew motor which has a brake. The complication of adding a sensor to the equation led me to go this route. I think the question is still a valid one though.
  21. I'm screwing up my courage to make a similar holster as my first ever leather project. If mine turns out 10% as well as yours I'll be happy
  22. All you need is the right search term :-) But there is more than one meaning to "sew up the arm" (eeewwww!) I see the Techsew 2900 would be perfect for this task. Perhaps the Artisan 4011. In the short run - leather aside - it would appear this little beauty would do the trick as well - for $305! http://www.ebay.com/...=item2eca1b8396
  23. Wow - really showing my ignorance here but advanced age brings with it the abandonment of embarassment :-) For what we're doing - in an ideal world - we'd have a cylinder arm machine in as small a diameter as possible that allowed the operator to sew into the arm from the end. Material is actually 3mm Neoprene but +- 8oz leather will also be used in a later iteration. So...does such a machine exist?
