Does this technique have a name?

I have several items I want to put leather handles on. All of them are cylinder is shape.. Imagine a dowel.. Varying sizes but most of them no more than 3/8 in diameter probably. To give you an idea, one item is a wooden spoon I carved a few years ago, and want a leather handle on it. I do not want to wrap, like a golf club handle or steering wheel. More one piece of leather all the way around. I assume I'd lace it but was wondering if there is a better way? Thanks in advance!
