  1. Thats nice Bob!!! What did you use for the top?

    Thanks,

    Chris

Thanks Chris, the granite slab is a grave marker that wasn't used.... :cowgirl: I purchased it from the local shop, it's about 3.5 or 4 inches thick. The rest of the bench top is made from "area board", some call it "puck board". It's available in different thicknesses, it's basiclly hard plastic. My knife is not damaged by it, not does it cut too deep into it either. I dn't mind using it at all. The cutting table in the middle of the shop is also covered with the same stuff.

  2. Yes, the splitters comes out and there are other boards with different tools that also fit in that spot. A rounder for one and also a pinking machine as well. I think the magnetic tool holders work well for many things. Clearly not all tools though. It wasn't that expensive to build either. I hired a local fella with some skills and we used birch because it's plentiful around here and looks nice. I like having all the drawers for storage.

  3. Hey folks, just recently got an request to put a pocket onto new pair of chinks. I've never been asked to do that before and don't know the best way to go about it.

Is the pocket best on the inside or outside. I've seen some sew onto the inside of the leg, but don't know how to finish it so it doesn't tear in the cut out. If you have some pictures of how it's best constructed, that would be wonderful and helpful. I'd like to put a flap onto the pocket with snap cover.

Your thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance to every.

PS, I'll post some pictures of the results after the job is done.

  4. Often when I finish a new chap order, I use the parts left over to cut coasters. We have a clicker and die for cutting. The die is a circle of 3-3/4 inch diameter. We've made them from veg tan saddle skirting as well and they tool real nice.

I would hate to have to cut circles by hand, it would be difficult to make them perfect each and every time. If any of you want I can cut some out and send them in the mail. Send me a message.

  5. Hello, I'm looking for some advise or suggestions on the best way to restitch a saddle horn on a western saddle. I would love to hear how you all do this I'm sure there are several ways.

    Thanks

Several ways? Only one to my knowledge. Two needles, thread and awl with a handle. I usually work in a clockwise direction, but thats up to you. Oh, i almost forgot, it maybe best to pull the old stitches out first.

  6. Hi Stewart,

What I'd use is some good contact cement, like Barges, or Weldwood. Make sure you "rough" up the stainless with some sandpaper first, & then clean with alcohol. Once the alcohol is all dried off, then just follow the directions on the can. I would put two coats of cement on, before sticking them together,,, just make sure thet are positioned correctly. They will stick for good. Ed

Do what Ed says exactly..... solvent based contact cement is the best, just let it dry and use two coats.... I use weldwood and have no prlblems glueing anything, with the exception of latigo and oil tanned leather.

  7. To remove water stains, most saddle makers use oxalic acid. I use it to bleach out stains of various types.

In this case you will want to use it everywhere, on the whole saddle and use a good sponge to apply it outside where it can drip onto the ground. Get the leather good and wet EVENLY.

Maybe the drug store will sell it. Mix a table spoon or two into one quart of water. Warm water works good for quick penetration.

If in dought, ask a saddle maker to do the work for you. It shouldn't cost you much more than 50 dollars to bleach out that saddle. It will remove the stains, at least most of the stains, depending on the degree. It will lighten the color up and bring no harm to the saddle.

    Hope this helps you out.

  10. I just bought a set of HideCrafters, but they are out of the big size. They are the Procrafter series, so they are one step above craft japan, but below Barry King.

I had a set of those stamps. They look real nice for sure. But make no mistake, if you expect to hit them with a maul and wish to get good color into your stamping.... they will bend. Good luck, I hope they work for ya.

  11. By not allowing the slaughter and shipping of horse meat over seas has done this nation a great dis-service. It's done more harm than anything.

I've worked as a farrier for the best part of 25 years, seen alot of horses that should be shipped and other wise useless for anything. What are people going to do with these kind of horses? At one time, they brought as much as 1$ pound for live horses. This whole thing is crazy, lots of folks have horses they can't afford to feed and starve because of it. Whats the sense in that?

Someone posted earlier that horses are being turned out on the road for law enforcement to deal with. Unwanted horses...

The only bright light in this whole picture is that Canada does allow shipping and slaughter of horses for meat. The shortage for supply and demand will only serve to drive up the prices paid over seas. So ship your unwanted horses to Canada, they have a slaughter house in Fort Mcloud, Alberta. not sure of the spelling on that town.

I think the tree huggers and bleeding hearts have pushed things too far left. Thats my two bits worth.
