Hi Highmaintenance, I work with both veg and chrome tanned leather and like a lot of people I made the mistake when I first started by getting a bell skiver without an aspirator(a suction device to help pull the waste through. With chrome a stone feed wheel also gives better results and without the aspirator the offcut waste tends to stick to the stone and wraps around wrecking the following material to be skived. I have a couple but I find the Fortuna to be the better one.If you check my profile you will see some pics of and notes etc.

Just found this link which shows a good example of the problems that happen without a aspirator on the skiver.
