  1. These scales started as plain aluminum (clear anodized to avoid the white rub-off that can happen with aluminum) scales from the ring lord (.com). These are the large scales, but they make scales from tiny to extra large. I colored them with various inks and did an initial sealing coat of Mod Podge Dimensional Magic. The Mod Podge is not water proof, so I followed it with a layer of epoxy resin and used a small torch to get rid of bubbles caused by brushing on the resin. The Ring Lord is the originator of these scales as far as I know, and any other supplier is basically a middle man and reselling the scales from TRL. They're a Canadian company, but ship worldwide. I believe Aussie Maille is the go to supplier of scales for those down under because the shipping from here to there is horrendous. With my arm hanging, these scales go sideways around my arm. I have another set of scales that I intend to turn 90* and see how it works out. I need to work out the spacing for the holes where the scales are attached to the cuff because these are still a little too loose for my liking and spacing the holes would tighten it up more. The only thing is I think if I turn the scales 90* the free end would overlap the edge of the cuff and might rub against the skin and become irritating, or hinder hand movement too much. If I have the free end facing the elbow, it would solve that, but unless the scales are very tight to the leather they might flop around a lot. Basically, I don't know... but I fully intend to mess around with it and find out. The good thing is I can turn them 90* and test the wearing particulars simply by turning the bracelet around.

I've had this bracelet in mind for a while. It's one of my first forays into working with leather with an actual goal in mind (aside from just practicing on scrap). I've also just gotten into adding ink to scales for maille and these are some of my experiments. By the way, India ink and shellac-based ink do not play well with Mod Podge dimensional magic, but didn't have any effect on the resin once everything was dry. This bracelet is just under 3 inches wide and I used line 20 snaps for the closure. After playing with it for a bit, I need to go back and hammer a couple of the snaps a little tighter... I also made it a scant 1/8" too small for my wrist, but them's the breaks when you're experimenting I suppose. Going forward, the holes I punched to attach the scale patch will need to be a bit farther apart so the scales aren't quite so floppy, and the snaps will need to be set a tad closer to the ends of the leather so it actually fits me... But aside from that I'm pretty happy with the results. The Fiebing's turquoise dye also comes very close to matching the turquoise rings I used to attach the scales to the leather, which was a pleasant surprise.
