i want to make bolt covers for rifles, gun bag, scabards, wallets, binocular case, but I want to be able to carve into the leather itself.

Hi everyone, getting into leather work and wanting to source leather (vegetable tanned ) but what Im finding is a exorbitant prices..... Is this the industry norm? For example Grade 1 $161 per M2. Current suppliers I have found are: Tandy Leather Birdsall Leather East Coast Leather Mac-Lace Leather Packer Direct Any help would be great.
