Nice case, like the design, are you wrapping the leather around pvc or aluminum tubing?

Sorry I had not responded sooner, computer problems. The thickness of the leather is 4-5 oz. that thickness seem to work very well for me. Appreciate the comments.

Completed this fly rod and matching reel case this week, i used Tandys Professional Waterstain Dark Brown for the trim and Eco-Flo antique Gel Saddle Tan for the main body. i completed the case by sewing it around a 2 nch diameter aluminum tube. I did not have a pattern to build the reel case so i tried to match the rod case as best as i could.

How did you apply the colors? Was the reddish applied first then the darker edges, I like the color combination it came out very nice.

i just finished a 45 inch leather fly rod case for a client in Utah. I stamped the using a geometic design patten as a border around the edge of the case. I then stained the case using Tandy's Eco-Flo All in One stains ( Fudge Brown for the dark color and Prairie Tan for the lighter color). I attached all the hardware i needed for the straps and then assembled the top and bottom cap using the saddle stich method of sewing to complete the case. i then conditioned and waterproofed the case using Fiebings Aussie Leather Conditioner which contains Beeswax. thank you for taking the time to look at my work. it seems that i can only post 1 photo as my pic files are to large.

This is the latest case i have put together . i stamped a geometic pattern as a border and seperated the case in two colors, the darker color is 3 coats of Bison Brown Leather dye from Eco-Flo and the orange color is really GEl Antique Tan also by Eco-Flo. the length is 24 inches long and 2 inches in diameter. the finished leather is wrapped around a 2 inch PVC pipe. I used Tandy rivits to secure the carrying strap and top cap.All of it is hand sewen using the Saddle Stitch method. The fly rod case is the same design stamp using the same dyes and stain and i used a contempory Bag Clasp sold by Tandy.

Thanks for your comments, i did the stitching over a period of three evenings, a total time of about 3 and a half hours, i would do a little then take a break, then come back and do some more. I have never tried to do it in one sitting, i always figures that i would make to many mistakes that way. since i wasnt in a hurry i was not to concerned with the sitiching time. i spend more time figuring out the color and then getting the leather work done.

It took some playing around with different colors of dye before i found what i was looking for. i was once told by a customer when i first started working on fly rod cases that the details were important, he figured that if he spent a ton of money on a fly rod he wanted to place it in a case that looked good and the details were very important, i agree. tahks for your comment.

I thought about using lace with the double loop method but i figured it would not look as nice. thanks for your comment. I working on that i just have to figure out a nice design that is not to bulky.

I put together this 2 inch diameter 22 inches long fly rod case for my back packing trips so i would not end up breaking my small fly rod. I dyed the case using Tandys Caynon Tan dye and applied 5 coats of dye to achieve the color i wanted, I hand stitched the case using waxed white thread and attached the straps using brass rivits. Once i finished the case i sealed it with Fiebings " Tan Kote" and waterproofed it with Aussies Leather conditioner also made by Fiebings. Here are some photos. Thanks for looking at my work.

Good to hear from another southern colorado leatherworker, i am located in Colorado Springs, working mostly on leather fly rod cases , checkbook covers and computer cases.

I thought i would share with you my attempt in putting a small leather rod case that could be used for back packing in to some remote areas. its difficult to carry a longer rod case into some of these spots and i thought that a small 19 in case would work well. I hand stitched the case and used two different color in the stain, darker stain is Brown Fudge, lighter stain is Prairie Tan. Revised posting. had to correct my web site. First time post on "Show Off", I would value your input regarding my 1st attempt in putting together a laptop/brief case. I have been building fly rod cases and had a decent piece of leather left over and decided to built myself a laptop case for my computer, it can also be used as a brief case. I stained it using Tandy's all in one Chocolate Cherry stain and used black pig skin to line the interior. all the hardware i purchased from the local Tandy dealer and stamped an Elk on the backside of the case. Hello everyone, here is my first attempt in making a leather laptop/briefcase. I have been building fly rod cases and i had some good quality leather left over so i thought i would give this a shot. this case is 22 inches long( with flap open) 12 1/2 with flap closed, 14 3/4 inches wide and 4 inches deep. I stained the entire case with a All IN ONE product from tandy called Chocolate Cherry. I stamped a geometric design on the edge and an elk on the back of the case. I laced the entire case with black 3/32 leather lace and placed a contempory bag clasp that i purchased from tandy to hold it together. I then made a shoulder strap to case the case. I lined the inside of the case with Mission Grain Pigskin lining from Tandy.
