juki thread trimmer and efka foot lifter.

Hello all! So I picked up a second hand juki lu 1114-4 last week and I've been trying it out. I'm very happy with it overall, larger bobbin, automatic lubrification and bartack. 

I am having trouble with the following elements:

1. The thread trimmer does not cut the thread, it moves but nothing is cut. Any tips? I'm unfamiliar with this system.

2. The foot lifter on the efka control board doesn't work. At the rear of the machine there is a big screw which once held a control box maybe? The model is a vd552.
