Kennedyco Report post Posted October 2, 2023 Hi everyone, I’m fairly new here and don’t really post much so please don’t be too critical of my question as I’m always learning. I have received a very beautiful horse butt hide that has a lot of bending due to it still basically being in the shape of the horse it came from. The rump area is almost bowl shaped and sticks up when I lay it on a flat surface. Is there a way to flatten it or am I going to have to be incredibly creative when planning the project? Any advice would be great! Thanks
fredk Report post Posted October 2, 2023 Assuming it has been veg tanned; give it a good soaking with clean warm water. Lay it out on a big board, which has preferably been covered in clean white paper, cover the hide with more clean paper, then lay a big board on top of it. Put lots of heavy weights on top of the top board. Leave to dry for several days or a week, or even longer. This may need to be repeated

Case it in warm water, I would then stretch it (put the center of the butt around a large pole or post then hold the ends and pull with all your might), then allow to COMPLETELY dry between 2 boards while under weights.
