Littlef Report post Posted November 24, 2024 I made this little Shotgun Rest with an imbedded magnet for a friend of mine. This gives you a place to rest the shotgun muzzle for a couple minutes while waiting for your turn, during a game of trap. In trap, you rotate shooting positions after every 5 shots. When it comes time to rotate, the magnet sticks to the muzzle of the shotgun, so you don't have to bend over and pick it up. Then, you just step on the front of the pad, and pull off the barrel when it's your time to shoot. I wet formed around the magnet using a paper creaser. When I got it shaped, I dropped magnets around the perimeter until it dried. I backed it in suede to give it some grip to minimize it slipping around. I sealed it in tan-kote, and then I used Fiebings spray water protector on the suede. Wworks pretty slick.
DieselTech Report post Posted November 24, 2024 Looks nice! Great work. Did you dye it? Or is that just the tan-kote giving it that color? Thanks.

The main pad is Spanish brown, the cover over the magnet is Cordovon. I applied a resist, and antique. The antique bled a bit when I applied tan-kote, so its a little darker then when I started. I also think my Tan kote went bad. Its way thicker than it should be,. Its almost a gel. Which is odd, cause I bought it in the last year.

For the thread I used Ritza Tiger thread in Colonial Tan. I think the thread contrast pops against the Spanish brown. I saw Chakotay made a video on youtube using this color combination, and I really dig it.
JH837 Report post Posted January 1 Did you apply your dyes full strength or diluted down to get a nice even coverage. Also what do you use to apply the dye? I did a makeup bag front panel last night and thinned pro dye walnut and applied with a larger flat brush around tooling and it looks even but god it took me forever to get a nice even coverage doin it that way. I really love the color combo you chose. Nice work
JH837 Report post Posted January 1 I’m still pretty inexperienced and have a ton to learn so I like to ask questions and learn from everyone possible I hope you don’t mind. Happy New Years I’m sure your friend loved his rest! I know I would it is well thought out and put together. I’m using magnets on the makeup bag closure and I was wondering how I wanted to go about it and i honestly really like the way you did it but don’t know if it will go well on a bag or if I should try to inlay it on flesh side of the flap and flesh side of the inside of the bag to hide it best. I’ll have to look into ways of doing so.

I have to keep my finishes inside the home during winter because my shop will be just as cold as the sub zero temps outside until I get the gear flowing
DoubleKCustomLeathercraft Report post Posted January 1 Oops, meant to say until I get the heat flowing. It gets -30's f here every year for a few weeks with it dropping as low as -54. So I even worry about dyes and the such, but haven't had any freezing issues with them. My shop is solar powered, off grid cargo trailer conversion and i do have to worry about batteries too

I really love the color combo you chose. Nice work Diluting only really helps make the due to a bit further when you are using feibings pro dye. I tried doing that but found it wasn't really making much of a difference, if any. What's great about pro dye is that it will not "over dye" for lack of knowledge on what it would actually be called. In other words of you get a variance in shades you can go back and dye the lighter spots, or even the whole thing to make it more uniform. Where as other dyes you try that and you end up with hard over lapped areas that can make a piece really blotchy. So basically what i guess I'm getting at is, if your saturate the leather enough the colors come out very evenly without getting darker and darker with every try. You'll reach a point that it just doesn't change the tones anymore. Hope that makes sense

I applied it with a shearling applicator. 14 hours ago, DoubleKCustomLeathercraft said: Did it ever freeze? I know most the finishes can't freeze, but I've never found out why. I think I bought the dye over a year ago, and jI ust opened it. I do keep supplies in the garage from time to time. Maybe it was out there sometime last year during a freezer.
