singer 51w56 stitch length

can’t figure out stitch adjuster… threaded adjuster seems to not adjust… stuck on VERY small stitches…adjuster completely unthreads and is removable but doesn’t seem to adjust anything…manual provides little help other than describing the greater and lesser adjustment process…HELP!!!

we recently had a similar issue with a 153w both have a similar adjuster for stitch length. So maybe this helps:
